Job Description


The Helena Public Schools are accepting internal applications for an Instructional Coach position. We are hiring for an Instructional Coaches to be located at Helena Middle School which will be an HEA bargaining unit position. The position will be posted internally only.

The Coach might have to travel to do training and instruction. This position requires a Montana Teaching License with appropriate endorsement at the time of employment. Pay will be based on your current contracted Step and Lane placement.

Instructional Coach

SUMMARY: Provide Instructional coaching to teachers through reflective coaching cycles that support planning, developing and implementation of functions and interventions related to curriculum, instruction and staff development within assigned buildings. Develop, oversee and manage literacy and math operations of educational programs and services for the school. Collaborate with district admin, building admin, other instructional coaches and assigned (take out) consultant to plan and implement district literacy and math initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Develops lesson plans and instructional material to help provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.

  • Build collegial relationships between coaches, teachers and principals.
  • Plan lessons with teachers based on the systematic study of student needs.
  • Facilitate teachers\xe2\x80\x99 expertise with best instructional practice, specifically differentiation, standards, Understanding by Design, technology, Quadrant D and Common Core.
  • Collaborate with teachers to establish a \xe2\x80\x9ccurrent reality\xe2\x80\x9d of their classroom environment using video and/or observation.
  • Guide teachers in setting goals to improve their professional practice.
  • Provide teachers with training opportunities using the district\xe2\x80\x99s \xe2\x80\x9cinstructional playbook,\xe2\x80\x9d professional consultants, or other teachers.
  • Reflect with teachers on lessons as they implement effective instructional practices.
  • Monitor instructional effectiveness and student progress using tools and strategies gained through teachers\xe2\x80\x99 professional development.
  • Build and maintain confidential relationships with teachers. The conversations and interactions that the coach has with teachers must always remain confidential so that a high level of trust is created and maintained between the teacher and the coach. Exceptions to this include imminent physical or psychological danger to the students.
  • Meet with the school administration and leadership team on a regular basis to examine school data and assist in school-wide planning (including professional development).
  • Collaborate with other instructional coaches and buildings.
  • Research professional literature and field studies to identify best instructional practices to foster high achievement in reading and literacy development.
  • Develop and deliver professional development to staff on best practices in reading instruction, literacy and math development. Ensure a staff development program that addresses literacy curriculum needs.
  • Collaborate with building principals in the development and presentation of high quality reading and math instruction/literacy professional development.
  • Plan, manage and work cooperatively with the Helena Public Schools Curriculum Administrator, district administrators and building principals.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of instructional literacy and math programs.
  • Assist administration in coordinating, collecting and organizing building data.
  • Assist teachers in applying data reflection to lesson planning and PLC work.
  • Facilitate communication between admin and teachers to support the PLC process.
  • Model lessons and instructional strategies in classrooms that demonstrate new concepts or approaches to learning so teachers can learn by observing.
  • Informally observe (non-evaluative) lessons and provide feedback for teacher\xe2\x80\x99s professional growth and student success.
  • Assist in the development of high, quality professional development.
  • Review PLC feedback forms weekly and respond appropriately in a timely manner.
  • Provides summer school support and other added training for educators district wide.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, the district has the right to modify the job duties to meet the interests of the students and district at large.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
None

This position is a peer- lead position requiring the successful incumbent to work effectively with a variety of professionals in diverse settings with unique needs. Although non-supervisory, the successful incumbent may be asked to lead and direct effective teacher intervention strategies, assess and support to maximize student engagement and ensure content effectiveness.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Successful experience in curriculum design/implementation, instructional strategies, assessment, data analysis and high quality professional development. Extensive knowledge of and ability to use technology to improve instruction, conduct assessments, maintain and manage data. Experienced, successful, K-12 educator is required for this position.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Montana teaching certificate.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
