Position Summary
The MEP Superintendent plays a critical leadership role in coordinating and delivering complex mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection (MEPF) systems on high-performance commercial projects. This role is responsible for ensuring that all MEPF systems are designed, installed, tested, and commissioned to meet project specifications, operational standards, and client requirements.
This individual provides both strategic and hands-on oversight of MEPF trade partners, coordinates testing and commissioning, ensures constructability and operability, and drives facility readiness and system integration. The MEP Superintendent serves as the central liaison between design teams, construction managers, commissioning agents, and facility operations stakeholders.
Essential Duties
Collaborate closely with construction teams to manage MEPF trades through design, installation, inspection, and commissioning phases.
Lead and coordinate the planning and execution of all MEPF-related activities across multiple projects.
Develop and manage project-specific commissioning (Cx) plans and project execution strategies.
Oversee implementation of Operational Project Readiness (OPR) and Commissioning Management (CxM) services.
Review contract documents--including design drawings, specifications, submittals, and shop drawings--for operability, functionality, and constructability.
Establish and maintain testing and certification requirements for MEPF equipment and systems.
Develop project commissioning schedules in alignment with CPM milestones and contractual requirements.
Lead Cx team meetings; communicate testing progress, sequence, and issue resolution plans.
Coordinate and oversee all Level 4/5 commissioning testing, ensuring full system functionality and documentation compliance.
Track and manage all issues identified during testing through to closure, leveraging Cx software for documentation control.
Supervise MEPF subcontractors to ensure installation meets code compliance, safety standards, and performance requirements.
Ensure integration of mechanical, electrical, and control systems, including automation and building management systems (BAS).
Provide technical expertise to troubleshoot MEPF and controls issues in the field.
Participate in Owner/Architect/Contractor meetings to present progress and resolve system or schedule conflicts.
Ensure all documentation, reports, and test results are properly recorded, organized, and delivered to the project team.
Mentor and develop technical staff to strengthen the team's facility solutions expertise.
Required Qualifications
Minimum 10 years of experience in commercial construction with MEPF or building controls contractors, general contractors, or commissioning agencies.
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Facilities Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
Proven ability to manage complex MEPF systems on large-scale commercial or mission-critical projects.
Proficiency in P6 and/or Microsoft Project for schedule management.
Strong working knowledge of facility operations, building systems, and MEPF commissioning procedures.
Experience with building controls, automation systems, and system testing protocols.
Excellent project management, planning, and coordination skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Project, Word, SharePoint) and Adobe Cloud.
Ability to read and interpret design documents, drawings, and technical data.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present technical concepts clearly.
Valid driver's license required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with commissioning in critical environments such as hospitals, airports, or data centers.
Knowledge of LEED, DBIA, or other professional accreditation programs.
Experience leading cross-functional teams through design-build project delivery.
Strong understanding of energy efficiency principles and sustainable building operations.
