The Medical Technical Specialist will work closely under the leadership of the Section Supervisor, assisting in technical operations and performing specialized testing in the areas of chemistry/immunology in an accredited laboratory. This position is responsible for assisting the section supervisor in the overall department performance, quality, and accuracy of the results reported; maintenance of instrumentation (scheduled, preventive, and troubleshooting, as needed); preparation of standards, calibrators, and reagents; writing policies/procedures; and adherence to the laboratory\'s quality management program. Specific responsibilities/duties may differ based on the department; responsibilities will be defined in collaboration with section supervisor and laboratory management. This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

1. Performs and reports testing procedures in an accurate manner and serves as a technical resource for the assigned department.
a. Performs testing according to department policies with minimal supervision. Recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems.
b. Ensures test results correlate with each other and patient\'s available LIS history. Understands age specific normal values.
c. Accurately enters results into the LIS. Timely review all manually entered results.
d. Calls all critical results according to policies MS-48 and Critical Value Reporting (Lab Policy).
e. Prints and reviews pending reports making sure to resolve any problems.

2. Participates in QC/Maintenance activities within the department. . Performs and documents various quality control and equipment procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations. Takes remedial action when necessary. Document and alerts supervisor to unresolved problems.
. Performs other job related duties as assigned by supervisor, manager, or director.
a. Assists supervisor with departmental correlations, validations, and other CAP regulatory requirements.
b. Performs and trains new employees on departmental instruments and the associated routine maintenance. Performs and assists supervisor with proficiency testing and competency assessments in each department as assigned.
c. Acts as a resource to the team when troubleshooting downed instruments. or. Consistently records any problems in instrument log book. Notifies supervisor when appropriately.
d. Completely and accurately reviews, verifies, and or signs/dates all designated documents according to department policies and established timeframes.
e. Seeks solutions to resolve unexpected problems that arise. Recognizes when and when not to contact supervisor with help resolving issues.
f. Restocks work areas with supplies and assists with departmental ordering.

3. Performs and reports tests within established timeframes.
. Performs routine tests within established timeframes.
a. Performs STAT tests as a priority in regard to routine tests.
b. Prioritizes patient samples over remedial tasks.
c. Fosters teamwork by offering assistance to other departments when assigned work is complete. Maintains high visibility in work areas and provides leadership for daily operation issues for the team across all shifts.
d. Completes work left from previous shift as required.
e. Acknowledges and responds tactfully to requests Is responsive to requests for help or guidance from other team members. f. Provides timely, relevant, effective communication to all staff.
f. Remains current with new/revised procedures and methods in the laboratory. Assists supervisor with any procedural edits or updates

4. Adheres to safety standards and is an asset to the department.
. Prevents and takes corrective action for physical safety, sanitation, and infection control within work area.
a. Dependable, punctual, and adheres to the policy for covering unscheduled absences.
b. Communicates effectively with all shifts.

Qualifications

Experience Minimum Required

  • 3 years recent, consecutive experience in specialty, to include demonstrated abilities in teaching, human resource development, communication and problem solving.
Experience Preferred/Desired
  • Three years recent, consecutive experience in specialty, to include demonstrated abilities in teaching, human resource development, communication and problem solving.
Education Minimum Required
  • BS in science
Education Preferred/Desired
  • Degree in medical technology from a NAACLS accredited MT program.
Training Minimum Required
  • NAACLS program completed or experience as required.
Training Preferred/Desired
  • Medical Technology program.
Special Skills Minimum Required
  • Familiar with computer and computerized equipment, organization and team skills.
Special Skills Preferred/Desired
  • Working knowledge of computer and computerized equipment.
Licensure and/or Certifications Required
  • Nationally accepted laboratory certifying agency.
  • Specialty certs may include SBB, SC, SH, SI, SM.
Licensure and/or Certifications Preferred/Desired
  • ASCP or AMT or HEW
  • MT(ASCP)
