The Day-to-Day:

The Medical Director at Matter Health is an incredible opportunity for Physicians looking to advance the future of healthcare delivery in our country. We primarily see \xe2\x80\x9cdual eligible\xe2\x80\x9d patients \xe2\x80\x93 those who qualify for both Medicare and Medicaid. This gives us the honor to serve a high-need population uniting the medical complexity of the aged and disabled with the social barriers faced by the impoverished and disenfranchised of our society.

At Matter we treat the whole person \xe2\x80\x93 body, mind, and soul \xe2\x80\x93 by focusing on mental health and the social determinants just as much as physical medical conditions. We embrace a truly preventative care ethos and aim to keep patients happy, health, and at home. We accomplish this by becoming proactive rather than reactive \xe2\x80\x93 coaching patients to long-term healthy behaviors and managing chronic diseases so that they stay chronic, rather than acute.

The Medical Director will have the opportunity to work as part of a world-class interdisciplinary team with resources at their fingertips unheard of in many primary care settings. Through a mix of population management, virtual care and on-site support, the Medical Director will oversee multiple clinical sites and Matter\xe2\x80\x99s Primary Care Providers, which are Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants. In addition to enabling high-value care for their ascribed panel of patients, you will have a critical voice and leadership role in our rapidly growing organization, where opportunities are limitless.

What Leads to Success?

Patient Care

  • Take accountability for the holistic primary care and outcomes for a panel of older adults including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion and care coordination and documentation.
  • Oversee interdisciplinary teams in their management of acute and complex chronic medical conditions. This primarily involves feedback, coaching, and clinical guidance for nurse practitioners, but may include input for our member experience managers and other roles.
  • Be highly accountable for meaningful clinical metrics across the panel, including minimal hospital admissions, preventative disease screenings, high-quality chronic disease management, and patient experience.
  • The Medical Director will not be personally involved in the care of every patient on the panel but entrusted to think and act independently, using data and case discussions with their team to identify those patients most in need of physician-support.
  • Direct care may be a mix of in-person and virtual, with work from home options available.
  • Ensure evidence-based clinical decisions are made, and stay abreast of medical literature updates.
  • Advocate for patients across the healthcare ecosystem, including collaborating with inpatient providers during hospitalizations and outpatient specialists.
  • Practice as a \xe2\x80\x9cconfident generalist,\xe2\x80\x9d minimizing outside referrals whenever we can provide the care needed ourselves.

Leadership, Culture, and Strategy
  • Bring your unique talents to the broader organization in many potential ways including mentorship, preceptorship, interviewing and training new providers, joining internal committees, and representing Matter to external organizations like health plans, hospital systems, and housing complexes.
  • Act as a cultural beacon for your team. Set the example by putting patients first. Coach others to embrace Matter\xe2\x80\x99s mission, methods, and tools. You are accountable for the frictionless teamwork of clinics under your supervision and the satisfaction/retention of teammates. Embrace continuous improvement; share lessons learned with the broader organization and align your team with new company initiatives or processes.
  • Radiate professionalism. Hold yourself and those around you to the highest standards. Lead clinical meetings and facilitate interdisciplinary discussion. Adhere to your department goals/objectives, standards of performance, regulatory compliance, quality compliance, and policies and procedures.
  • Work hand-in-glove with non-clinical counterparts. Respect and learn from those with different roles, backgrounds, and skill sets on your team. Partner with your practice manager partner to ensure all clinics are operating optimally.
  • Having minimal direct reports to eases you of administrative headaches and allows focus on the clinical decisions that matter most.
Requirements

  • Mission-driven clinician with a passion for underserved populations, particularly older adults; strong buy-in to \xe2\x80\x9cvalue-based\xe2\x80\x9d concepts and care philosophy; excited to learn and execute new ways of providing care; a population health mindset, with a focus on smart allocation of scare healthcare resources; a proactive, rather than reactive, mindset
  • Required credentials include: M.D. or D.O. degree; board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or other applicable field; current active license in the state of employment; and DEA license
  • Comfort and experience working with nurse practitioners
  • Wide breadth of clinical knowledge for holistic primary care; comfortable caring for a highly complex, poly-chronic population; act as a \xe2\x80\x9cconfident generalist\xe2\x80\x9d, capable of managing most presentations to a primary care clinic without specialty referral
  • Experience or openness to using a metrics-driven approach to analyze cost, quality, and satisfaction data to drive clinical approach and program redesign
  • High degree of \xe2\x80\x9csoft skills\xe2\x80\x9d and emotional IQ; excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Technologically proficient, with the ability to quickly learn our EMR, novel informatics platform, use standard tools (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite), etc.
