Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Medical Coder to support a busy neurosurgery practice with a strong focus on pre-operative coding for insurance authorization and post-operative surgical coding. This role works closely with physicians, internal staff, and an external billing company to improve accuracy, efficiency, and revenue cycle processes.

Key Responsibilities

Determine the most appropriate CPT and ICD-10-CM codes prior to surgery using physician office notes and clinical documentation to support payer authorization Identify documentation gaps that may impact authorization and work directly with providers to resolve them Code neurosurgical procedures using operative reports and supporting documentation Apply correct CPT, ICD-10-CM, modifiers, and sequencing in accordance with payer and regulatory guidelines Collaborate closely with a contracted billing company to ensure consistent coding practices, resolve issues, and streamline workflows Serve as an internal coding resource to help reduce delays, rework, and denials Communicate professionally with physicians regarding documentation and coding clarification Maintain compliance with coding guidelines, payer policies, and HIPAA requirements

Required Qualifications

3+ years of surgical coding experience (neurosurgery, spine, or orthopedics preferred) Strong experience with pre-authorization or medical necessity coding support Proficient in CPT, ICD-10-CM, and modifiers Experience working with EMR systems and physician documentation Detail-oriented, collaborative, and able to work independently

Preferred Qualifications

Neurosurgery, spine, or orthopedic coding experience Experience working alongside external billing or coding vendors Interest in improving workflows and coding processes

Required Certification

Active AAPC CPC

Pay: From $24.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 per week
