Position Title: Library Media Assistant


Immediate Supervisor:
Building Principal


Summary:

Assist the Teacher Librarian with the school library media program, provide building wide clerical support, and assume duties to ensure the safety and security of students.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities: (Other duties may be assigned.)
  • Assume duties and responsibilities as assigned by building administration.
  • Assist students and staff in the use of a variety of resources; help them independently access information.
  • Provide reading guidance to students as directed by the Teacher Librarian.
  • Support professional standards of intellectual freedom, copyright, plagiarism and ethical use of materials.
  • Assist Teacher Librarian with implementing a building library media program, consistent with building and district goals.
  • Ensure that the library/media center is a "user friendly" environment characterized by efficient operations and a service orientation.
  • Assist with arranging, on a frequent basis, book-related displays and exhibits likely to interest the media center\'s patrons.
  • Assist with student production projects as directed by the Teacher Librarian and/or building administration.
  • Assist with the distribution and storage of all library media materials and equipment to provide maximum access for staff and students.
  • Prepare circulation desk for services on a daily basis with needed supplies.
  • Shelve, straighten and shelf reading/library materials.
  • Note returned materials and collect overdue materials.
  • Sort, pack and unpack materials.
  • Maintain records of acquisitions, holdings, circulation for hardware and materials inventory, maintenance and access purposes.
  • Assist with weeding obsolete materials from the collections to reflect changing curriculum needs of the building as directed by the Teacher Librarian.
  • Ensure that equipment is maintained, organized and repaired as needed.
  • Communicate with parents and community on services of the library media center.
  • Work collaboratively with and plan, review and report student and staff needs and concerns to the Teacher Librarian and/or building administration.
  • Recognize and facilitate an appropriate library/media environment for individual students and classmates in their work and behaviors.
  • Implement effective student behavior control strategies as directed by building administration and/or Teacher Librarian.
  • Perform a variety of clerical and computer-related tasks including but not limited to locating, copying, collating, distributing and/or grouping materials supporting instructional and building needs.
  • Assist with school supervision duties including but not limited to recess, hallways, lunch and classroom.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and abide by District and school policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate self as an appropriate role model for students in the areas of dress, language, observing Media Center and building rules and behavior.
  • Plan and organize work to efficiently meet schedules and deadlines.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills with the school community including students, colleagues, families and administration.
  • Promote an atmosphere of respect for students and adults.
  • Demonstrate ethical behavior.
  • Demonstrate regular and reliable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
