Responsible for assisting the residents with taking their medications utilizing appropriate procedures as outlined by the Resident Services Coordinator and in compliance with the State of Washington WACs. Review of WACs and facility policies regarding recording, documentation in the resident's chart, sign off of the MAR, signifying completion of assisted task, and observation of residents changing condition where appropriate are required.
Qualifications:
Numerical ability to verify strength of medication.
Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
Current CPR certification and First Aid.
Knowledge of universal precaution.
Ability to assist with a variety of medication delivery systems including bottles, blister cards, and other systems as they become integrated into the medication pass.
Ability to identify and verify on the medical record, the correct patient, time, dose, route, dosage form and drug as written on the MAR or physician order and the pharmacy printed label.
Be aware of therapeutic effects and side effects. Watch for signs of unintended drug response, intolerance, idiosyncrasy, and/or allergy. Use reference material available including the house pharmacy hotline.
Ability to assist with medications within one hour either way of the prescribed time, unless there are specific directions otherwise.
Ability to use other diagnostic tools to take vital signs if directed by the physician on the MAR.
Ability to use a glucometer, thermometer, blood pressure cuff, and oxygen concentrator or liquid oxygen.
Ability to count and take responsibility for narcotics locked in the narcotic drawer. Log out C2 and C3 meds from the narcotic ledger at the time of administration assistance.
Ability to relate positively, effectively and appropriately with residents, families, visitors and other community personnel.
Written skills required to document resident incidents, and notify appropriate authority.
Motor coordination and manual dexterity to sort and store medications in the medication cart.
Ability to work as a team member.
Possess special interest in and a positive attitude about working with geriatric residents.

Essential Functions:
Admission, Discharge, Transfer
Assist in the implementation of admission, discharge and transfer of residents according to facility procedures.
Resident Rights
Know the resident's rights. Help the residents exercise and/or protect their rights
Become knowledgeable about resident's choices and follow those choices accordingly.
Report resident's concerns to the supervisor
Maintain confidentiality of resident information.
Provide psychological support to all residents to help them adjust to their disabilities.
Preserve the dignity and comfort of the resident.
Resident Independence
Assist and encourage residents to be independent in areas of activities of daily living.
Assist and encourage residents to be active for reasonable periods of time as permitted.
Promote resident mobility through proper transfer techniques to/from bed, wheelchair, and stretcher.
Assist with ambulating as needed. Assist with daily range of motion exercises.
Maintain good body alignment and proper positioning of residents.
Transport residents from one place to another.
Elimination - (Monitor elimination status of residents.)
Offer and remove bedpans and urinals.
Assist residents to use commode.
Instruct and assist with bowel and bladder program
Check, change and clean incontinent residents as instructed
Document and report bowel and bladder patterns.
Collect urine and stool specimens as requested.
Give catheter care: measure and record intake and output.
Mealtimes
Prepare residents for meals. Assist to dining room as necessary.
Feed or assist residents.
Instruct residents in use of self - help devices.
Serve nourishments.
Observe residents for difficulties in chewing or swallowing while eating as needed.
Vital Signs
Take, record and report vital signs and weights using a variety of sphygmomanometer, thermometers and scales.
Infection Control
Practice proper hand washing technique.
Handle clean and dirty linens properly, without contamination.
Follow standard precaution procedures: use protective equipment and properly dispose of contaminated wastes.
Environment and Safety (Assure a safe, clean and comfortable environment for resident)
Place call lights within reach of residents and answer call lights promptly.
Know and implement facility safety rules.
Demonstrate proper use of equipment. Report equipment needs or repairs immediately
Clean equipment and utility areas as assigned.
Assure adherence to smoking policy.
Observe proper ventilation, temperature, light and noise level for day and night activities.
Report any incidents or accidents to the RCS or Supervisor
Keep the resident living areas neat and orderly: personal care items stored properly; clothing hung in closets or placed in soiled bins as appropriate.
Assist in fire control and resident evacuation during fire or disaster emergencies.
CPR
After receiving CPR training, must be able to be a first responder in a medical emergency; e.g. initiate and continue CPR until emergency help arrives.
Observations and Reporting
Report at beginning and end of each shift of duty.
Perform and document resident care activities according to written and verbal instruction from the RCS or supervisor.
Coordinate work assignment with other resident activities such as therapy, doctor appointments, activities, etc.
Observe resident for changes in behavior or condition and report all pertinent information to the RCS or supervisor.
Service Plans
Participate in the development and implementation of resident service plans according to facility policy and procedure. Keep informed of revisions in care plans through participation in mini-conferences.
Hospitality and Dignity
Maintain a friendly, helpful attitude toward residents, their families, staff, volunteers and visitors.
Attendance
Maintain a consistent attendance record to ensure proper resident care.
Orientation and Inservice Education
Participate in required orientation and in-service programs and attend staff meetings as requested
Policies and Procedures
Adherence to all facility policies and procedures.
Other Duties
Participate in committees as assigned.
Perform other duties as requested.
Report needs for personal belongings to appropriate persons.
Assist and encourage residents to participate in activity programs and special therapies as directed by the RSC and prescribed by the physician.
Care for and apply prosthetic devices as instructed.
Wash personal laundry for residents as indicated.
