Head Custodian/Assistant Director Facilities/Mechanical Supervisor
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Responsible for the inspection, adjustment and repair of any and all equipment within the Hartford Public Schools facilities, to include, but not limited to air handlers, exhaust fans, heating and cooling equipment, plumbing, electrical, grounds, painting, furniture and any other equipment or system deemed by the supervisor.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Investigate mechanical and structural problems/repairs and/or report back to supervisor.
Determine if and/or what trade may be required to complete the repair according to the local and state codes.
Assist workers in other related trades, including custodial.
Read blueprints and schematics and any other items related to any of the building trades or building systems.
Identify possible lead containing materials.
Understand and adhere to AHERA management, green-clean practices, critical information sheets.
Complete jobs assigned in a timely and professional manner to the standards set forth by supervisor and Hartford Public Schools
Perform other related work as assigned by supervisor and/or designee
Responsible for providing own hand tools
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
High school or vocational school diploma or GED required
Must possess a minimum of two years' mechanical experience and/or structural building maintenance
Ability to read and understand blueprints and the ability to perform in the trade from sketches and blueprints
Knowledge of all materials commonly used in his/her job, their characteristics and use
Required to have knowledge and skill in the use of all tools commonly employed in the performance of the job, as well as knowledge of the care and maintenance of these tools
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety protection of the trade together with the requirements imposed upon workers in the performance of work by the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Understand and adhere to AHERA management, green-clean practices, critical information sheets
Asbestos certification would be a plus
Ability to work on heights greater than 5 feet and in assignments that require bending for long periods of time
Required to have a valid driver's license and willingness to use own vehicle as well as transporting trade tools and limited material within reason
Must be available for emergency work outside of normal scheduled hours
Must be able to work within difficult time constraints and under stressful conditions
Must be able to lift more than 40lbs
Must be able to work in confined spaces
Knowledge of computerized maintenance management system
Capable of utilizing "School Dude" work order system
Any trade licenses by State of Connecticut (a plus)

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve-month work year. Pays is in accordance with Local 566 salary schedule 81: $56,240-$60,314 (2024-2025). May be required to work negotiated second shift hours
