General Summary:



The Mechanical Engineering Intern will support mill operations by assisting with mechanical system evaluations, preventive maintenance planning, and project implementation. This internship provides hands-on experience in an industrial manufacturing environment, offering exposure to equipment reliability, process optimization, and project engineering within the paper industry.





Education and/or Experience:





Must be currently enrolled as a student in an accredited undergraduate or graduate academic program and have completed one year of study.


Salary Compensation



$21/hr.





Schedule





8 or 10 hour "day" Monday-Friday





Position Details




Assist in troubleshooting mechanical issues on production and utility equipment. Support preventive and predictive maintenance programs to improve equipment uptime and reliability. Participate in mill projects, including equipment upgrades, installations, and modifications. Collect and analyze performance data to identify opportunities for mechanical and process improvements. Develop detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Work with maintenance and operations teams to ensure safe and efficient project execution. Observe and apply mill safety procedures and best practices in all activities. Assist in inventory management of spare parts and maintenance supplies. Prepare reports, charts, and presentations to communicate project results and findings. Perform other tasks as required by Mill Management.

Learning Objectives




Gain practical experience in mechanical system design, maintenance, and reliability. Understand paper manufacturing processes and equipment, including pumps, conveyors, dryers, and rotating machinery. Develop project management, documentation, and technical communication skills. Learn and apply industrial safety standards and engineering best practices.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements:




Practical application training may require some out-of-state travel to various other Pratt Paper Mills or vendor facilities Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment (glasses, earplugs, shoes, gloves, etc...) Drug testing/Screening, Background Checks, and Physical exam Recognition of safety hazards in immediate working area and eliminating/minimizing the hazard Must be a strong and effective communicator Capable of maintaining a professional attitude and demeanor Must possess strong problem solving skills and willing to try new ideas for continuous improvement Must be proficient in basic math skills Proficient in Google Docs, Microsoft Office and AutoCAD

Work Environment





Manufacturing environment and will be subject to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, and loud noises.


Physical Requirements



Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, typing, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Very Heavy Work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
