MCRE Technical Lead, Thermal Management System

The Molten Chloride Reactor Experiment (MCRE) will be the world\'s first fast spectrum molten salt reactor and the first chloride fueled molten salt reactor. TerraPower is seeking a highly motivated person to Lead the design, development, procurement and assembly of the ECS (Environment Cooling System) and CHT (Core Heaters). The ECS provides cooling to the in-shield environment. The CHT heats the reactor vessel and transitions salt fuel to a molten state prior to critical operations. As a system lead you will be responsible for the full lifecyle of the systems from preliminary system design and specification of system components through procurement, assembly, testing and installation. You will be responsible for delivery and performance of this system in both the full size, high temperature, non-nuclear MCRE prototype (Mockup) in our Everett facility as well delivery of system components for installation into MCRE at INL (Idaho National Lab). Depending on experience, you may also directly participate in assembly, integration and testing of the systems in the Mockup.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design of the systems to meet requirements within schedule and budget.
  • Work with thermal analysts to create and/or review detailed thermal models to ensure heating and cooling meet requirements.
  • Specify custom or COTS components for the system design.
  • Select and interact with suppliers to troubleshoot issues in order to optimize system cost and delivery of system hardware on time.
  • Work with other system leads and project team members to ensure the system design is fully integrated and fully supports the MCRE plant.
  • Support Auxiliary Group Lead in updating and reviewing system schedule and budgets.
  • Write procurement requisitions as necessary.
  • Write detailed system level, testing, commissioning and operations procedures.
  • Support assembly, integration and testing of the thermal management systems in the Mockup.
Key Qualifications and Skills
  • Degree in nuclear, mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in design and assembly of prototypical hardware in an industrial or similar environment.
  • Experience designing and building custom systems in an R&D environment.
  • Proficiency at interfacing with CAD personnel generating designs.
  • Familiarity with basic Similitude techniques for translating between analyses and various experiment data.
  • Experience optimizing designs for manufacturability, familiarity with design effects on assembly and manufacturing and vice versa.
  • Experience with complex high temperature machines or test facilities highly preferred.
  • Knowledge of a thermal analysis tool (SolidWorks COSMOS; StarCCM+; ANSYS FLUENT or CFX) a plus.
  • Knowledge of python a plus.
  • Previous instrument cooling system or high temperature heating system experience a plus.
  • Familiarity with writing testing and commissioning procedures a plus.
  • Ability to consistently deliver to an aggressive schedule and develop work arounds for the inevitable but unforeseen delays.
  • Self-motivated: able to seek out tasks and produce value aligned with team goals without waiting for next assignment.

Salary Range Level 11: $116,030 - $193,384

Salary Range Level 12: $157,405 - $218,119

*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 - 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary bands. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected candidate\'s qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Washington State.
