Position Summary

The Material Handler - Team Lead is responsible for overseeing daily operations within the lumber yard, ensuring safe and efficient material handling while also actively performing the duties of a Material Handler. This role provides leadership, training, and operational support to the material handling team and is essential to achieving company standards for productivity, safety, and customer service. Responsibilities include organizing materials, coordinating deliveries, and acting as the primary contact for yard operations on a day-to-day basis.

Key Responsibilities: Leadership and Coordination

- Supervise and guide the team of Material Handlers in day-to-day tasks and yard operations.

- Assign tasks, monitor productivity, and ensure proper execution of loading/unloading and delivery schedules.

- Train and mentor staff on proper material handling techniques and safety standards.

- Act as a liaison between the team and management, relaying updates and concerns.

- Foster a team-oriented environment that supports collaboration and continuous improvement.

Yard Operations

- Load and unload materials from trucks and customer vehicles using forklifts or manual handling.

- Stage, sort, and organize materials for storage or delivery.

- Verify inventory accuracy during receiving and outgoing shipments.

- Maintain a clean and safe yard environment by enforcing housekeeping and material placement protocols.

- Conduct daily inspections of equipment and report any needed maintenance.

Deliveries

- Perform timely and accurate deliveries of building materials to customer jobsites.

- Secure loads according to DOT standards; inspect load integrity before travel.

- Communicate with dispatch and jobsite supervisors for delivery coordination.

- Troubleshoot and resolve delivery issues as they arise, maintaining professionalism.

- Serve as a resource for other drivers and provide guidance on routes and best practices.

Customer Service

- Provide courteous and knowledgeable service to customers in the yard and on delivery sites.

- Assist customers with locating and loading materials when needed.

- Resolve complaints or concerns quickly and effectively, escalating when necessary.

- Promote a positive company image through professional interactions and service.

Safety and Compliance

- Lead by example in following all company safety policies and procedures.

- Conduct safety briefings and monitor for safe behaviors across the yard team.

- Ensure PPE usage and regulatory compliance at all times.

- Document incidents or unsafe conditions and communicate them to management.

- Promote a proactive safety culture among all staff.

Qualifications Education and Experience

- High school diploma or equivalent required.

- Minimum 2 years of experience in a lumber yard or warehouse environment.

- Previous leadership experience preferred; delivery experience a plus.

- Knowledge of lumber and building materials is highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies

- Effective leadership and team coordination skills.

- Strong interpersonal and communication abilities.

- Physically able to lift up to 80 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.

- Valid driver's license; CDL preferred for delivery duties.

- Forklift certification or ability to obtain one.

- Organized, safety-focused, and detail-oriented.

Schedule & Compensation

- Full-time position with potential weekend hours.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $26.00 per hour

Expected hours: 40 - 50 per week
