Job Description


The Alaka`ina Foundation Family of Companies is looking for a\xc2\xa0Master Plumber\xc2\xa0to support our government customer located in Frederick, MD. In addition to the proposed salary, the selected candidate will receive a one (1) time sign-on bonus in the amount of $5,000.00. This technician shall maintain methodological proficiency in Plumbing, Pipefitting and Welding. The technician will work with mechanical equipment, engineering principles, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and heating systems, medical gas systems, reverse osmosis systems, animal watering systems, clean steam generators, LN2, NFPA Class D Breathing Air, chemical disinfectant showers and bio-containment systems. DESCRIPTION OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Applies practical knowledge and expertise with engineering solutions in resolving technical problems real-time in both an industrial environment and in bio-containment laboratories.
  • Independently plan the work and lay out the needed placement, routing, and slope of the system, utilizing blueprints, sketches, or specifications as available; determines proper kind and size of needed parts and completes the installation or repairs, referring only unusual or the most difficult problems to the TPOC. After completing the work, tests the system for satisfactory performance, making any adjustments necessary.
  • Apply principles of various high pressure piping systems, clean steam generator, humidifiers and equipment are installed and operate; must understand operation of devices such as relief valves, check valves, pneumatic operated pressure regulators, and pilot operated pressure regulators, electronic operated pressure regulators and expansion joints are installed and operate; must have the ability to plan, layout, and install equipment and systems.
  • Reads and applies plans and blueprints, and utilize shop mathematics in laying out arcs and circles.
  • Fabricates and modifies animal cages, animal racks and scientific equipment; able to apply a wide range of manual welding processes such as oxyacetylene, oxyhydrogen and other industrial gases as well as knowledge of the arc processes (including inert gas-shielded ones) involving methods such as gas metal-arc, gas tungsten-arc, gas carbon-arc, plasma-arc, and atomic hydrogen welding; apply welding practices and standards on various metals and alloys such as different kinds of steel, aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel, brass, copper, bronze, magnesium, beryllium, and titanium react to different welding processes and techniques; weld metal parts and structures that may vary in size, shape, and thickness from very thin (e.g., .025 inches or less) to very thick (e.g., armor plating) requiring multiple welding passes and involving dissimilar metals such as copper to steel; and make welds that require complete penetration as well as complete fusion of base and filler metals even when welding in hard to reach places.
  • Devises special jigs and fixtures to hold the parts to be welded and to use techniques such as preheating, heat sinks, and stress relieving to maintain specified dimensions and to prevent distortion or burning of the parts being welded.
  • Installs and maintains supply and disposal systems and equipment, such as: sewage, water, oil separators, and gas distribution systems; eyewash stations, hydrants, hands free faucet, drinking fountains, water fixtures, lavatories, showers, mop sinks, foot pedals, mixing valves, fire sprinkler systems, water softeners, and similar systems.
  • Locate and tap main lines: plan and lay out the routing, placement, slant, fall, and proper location of systems and equipment; install valves, traps, and unions where needed for proper functioning of the system; assemble pipe and fittings; hang or lay assemblies into position; test for leaks; clear difficult stoppages in drain pipes; and disassemble and repair damaged sections including fabricating replacement parts when necessary, using hand and power tools common to the trade. Uses plans, blueprints, and sketches if available.
  • Performs work in bio-containment suites (BSL-3 and BSL-4) with highly hazardous infectious agents and toxins, and is required to participate in Bio-surety Personnel Reliability System, animal facilities and is required to be Hepatitis B Negative, and TB tested every 6 months. Shall qualify for and remain enrolled in the Biological Surety Requirement for Personnel Reliability Program in place at USAMRIID.
  • Uses and applies all applicable National, State, and Local Codes.
  • Assures that work assignments, procedures, sequence, methods, and deadlines are completed on time.
  • Perform on-site inspections as assigned, interpret blue prints for accuracy, confirming specifications, conducting visual and measurement testing, reviewing operation manuals, maintenance plans and procedures, identifying critical parts, develops operational procedures, standing operating procedures and inputting data into database.
REQUIRED DEGREE/EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
  • OSHA Approved Fork Lift Operator Certification
  • Master Plumber\'s License
  • Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention Certification
  • ASME IX, Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Certification, GTAW-6G or experience to qualify for the TIG welding certification exam
  • ASME IX, Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Certification, SMAW-6G or experience to qualify for the STICK welding certification exam
  • ASME IX, Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Certification, GMAW-6G or experience to qualify for the MIG welding certification exam
  • Medical Gas ASSE 6010 Certification\xc2\xa0
REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Must understand the installation and operation of devices such as relief valves, check valves, pneumatic operated pressure regulators, and pilot operated pressure regulators, electronic operated pressure regulators and expansion joints.
  • Minimum 4 years experience performing maintenance eon steam systems.
  • Minimum 4 years experience testing and maintenance of backflow prevention.
  • Minimum 4 years experience welding
  • Must have working knowledge of all applicable National, State and Local Codes.
  • Ability to read and apply plans and blueprints.
  • Analytical ability to determine the result of one system malfunction on other systems; maintenance requirements on facility systems to allow proper scheduled repairs; timely immediate action necessary to correct deficiencies; programmed budget requirements to keep building maintenance IAW regulatory guidance; and sufficient maintaining engineering and technical documents used in support of the maintenance and repair program.
