The Maintenance/Relief Operator is responsible for the preventative and corrective maintenance of the Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF), including the upkeep of structures, grounds, and equipment. This position performs mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of plant systems and operates wastewater treatment processes on a relief basis.
Essential Job Functions (including but are not limited to)
Performs preventative, predictive, and corrective maintenance on pumps, motors, valves, blowers, and related mechanical systems.
Diagnoses mechanical and operational problems. Repairs or replaces defective components.
Maintains accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, logs, and reports.
Performs routine inspections to ensure equipment reliability and proper system function.
Operates and maintains hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment safely and efficiently.
Assists in the operation of wastewater treatment processes, including solids handling, dewatering, and chemical feed systems, as needed.
Collects wastewater and sludge samples for laboratory analysis and assists in process control testing.
Monitors and records data from charts, graphs, meters, and SCADA systems. Reports operational anomalies promptly.
Performs general facility maintenance such as groundskeeping, mowing, snow removal, and building upkeep.
Observes and reports facility security, safety concerns, and equipment conditions. Takes corrective actions when appropriate.
Collaborates daily with operations, maintenance, and laboratory personnel to support plant performance and reliability.
Education/Skills/Experience
High school diploma or GED required.
One (1) year of experience in the operation or maintenance of mechanical or wastewater treatment equipment preferred.
Knowledge of pumps, motors, and mechanical systems, including maintenance and repair practices.
Ability to diagnose causes of mechanical or electrical malfunctions.
Working knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, procedures, and safety practices.
Understanding of basic electrical systems and lockout/tagout procedures.
Ability to interpret schematics, O&M manuals, and process flow diagrams.
Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills.
Ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, contractors, and the public, demonstrating tact and professionalism.
Welding experience (gas or arc) preferred.
Work Schedule
Compressed workweek: Tuesday-Friday, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM.
Must be available for on-call rotation and emergency call-ins after hours, weekends, and holidays as needed to maintain facility operations.
Working Environment
Work performed both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Exposure to loud noise, chemical and biological hazards, and moving mechanical parts.
Work governed by federal, state, and local regulations, including IDEM and OSHA standards.
Physical Requirements
Regularly required to stand, walk, bend, and reach.
Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
Must possess sufficient dexterity and vision for operating equipment and completing maintenance tasks.

Certificates/Licenses
Valid driver's license required.
Possession of, or ability to obtain within two (2) years, a Class I Indiana Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certificate.
