Job Description



Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Replaces fluorescent tubes, incandescent bulbs, ballast\'s switches receptacles, fixtures cleaning/lens replacements and installs short electrical runs which include new conduit and wiring.
  • Installs/refastens/repairs handrails, grab bars, curtain tracks, wall and ceiling mounted television stands, shelving, cabinets and other items or casework such as door closures and door stops.
  • Repairs a wide variety of equipment including but not limited to assembly and repair of geri-chairs, repairs manual/electrical items of rolling stock.
  • Performs general maintenance support work.
  • Reviews and completion of tasks in the maintenance and repair of service equipment.
  • Performs maintenance, repairs, installations, removals and calibrations of thermostats, heating elements, traps, associated valves, and piping.
  • Reads, writes, and comprehend written instructions and make simple computations and reports.
  • Use test equipment such as test lamps, voltage testers, amp meters and polarity testers.
  • Performs testing and checks polarity, grounding, and pin tension.
  • Ensures that all trade requirements are adhered to and all objectives have been met.
  • Performs all scheduled preventive maintenance by policy or direction.
  • Reads blueprints, sketches, and written or oral instructions by higher level journeymen, work leaders or Supervisors.
  • Maintains, stores, and safeguard tools, equipment, materials, and supplies for own area of assignment.
  • Uses standard tool and equipment associated with the tools of the trade to include drills, hand driven and power driven, hammers, power screen drivers and an assortment of hand tools.
  • Uses a variety of power tools/equipment including but not limited to power drills, saws, pneumatic/electric hammers, torque wrenches, multimeters, etc.
  • Makes repairs on walls and ceilings such as installation of reinforcement plates or studs, taping/patching of sheet rock and repairs, patching of holes/cracks.
  • Performs basic trade skills in areas of electrical, carpentry, plumbing, painting, and general mechanics.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspection on all heating systems, radiant, conduction, hydraulic and air handling equipment.
Work Schedule: 7:00am-3:30pm, subject to change based on VA needs

Physical Requirements: Employee is required to climb ladders, reach, and lift heavy loads over forty (40) pounds and walk long distances in a regular workday. A great amount of kneeling, bending, and climbing of stairways is required. Standing on ladders for long periods of time at various heights. Employee must be able to wear safety and protective clothing or equipment prescribed for the work setting. May be required to lift or move heavy equipment or furniture that may weight more than 50 pounds. May be exposed to chemicals and be fit tested for proper PPE and respirator.

Qualifications


To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 05/04/2023.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Without more than normal supervision


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Working Conditions: At times, Incumbent Is required to work In areas that have poor lighting. He/she Is required to work both Inside and outside In all types of weather. The Incumbent works In areas where clothes and skin can be soiled by grease, dust and steam. The Incumbent Is required to work In areas that are noisy, such as pump rooms, service rooms, etc., Including areas that are exposed to gases, fumes, smoke. and dust. He/she works in all areas of the Medical Center, Including contagious disease, and/or contaminated areas. Incumbent will be provided and required to wear universal protection items such as; caps, gowns, mask, full face, or any safety equipment.
