Summary

The purpose of this job is to assist the Horticulturist in leading and coordinating teams involved in construction projects, park improvements and major maintenance associated with landscaping beds, natural areas, and trees within the park system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities - The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description

  • Designs, constructs, and maintains landscapes in the City\'s public areas.
  • Leads and guides the work of assigned staff; prioritize and schedule workloads and ensure safety of staff and work sites.
  • Performs maintenance on trees in the City\'s public areas by planting, pruning, mulching watering, and administering disease treatments.
  • Conducts tree risk assessments and assist with the removal of trees in the City\'s parks, right-of-ways, public areas, and downtown areas.
  • Performs maintenance on the City\'s parks by, removing and control of pests, and conducting ecological and health management activities.
  • Diagnoses and corrects pest problems such as fungal diseases, weed and insect invasion.
  • Maintains records of pesticide applications as required by Missouri Department of Agriculture for all types of pesticide applications.
  • Assists with the design, installation and maintenance of automated irrigation systems for landscape areas throughout the park system.
  • Performs greenhouse management.
  • Performs snow removal and ice prevention.
  • Purchases tools, materials and supplies.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience - An equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent. Associate or technical degree in Parks and Recreation, Horticulture, plant science, agronomy or forestry management strongly preferred.
  • 3 to 5 years\' experience in forestry, grounds maintenance, plant nursery, or similar work.
Licenses or Certifications
  • Class B Commercial Driver\'s License (CDL) with no air brake restriction within 6 months of hire.
  • Department of Transportation (DOT) medical certification.
  • International Society of Arboriculture\'s Arborist Certification preferred.
  • Missouri Certified Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months of hire.

Knowledge of:
  • Current horticultural practices, prairie and forest restoration and management.
  • A variety of trees and shrubs and the proper installation, maintenance, and placement thereof.
  • Standard equipment safety procedures and precautions with industry related chemicals and the proper usage in prairies, landscapes, along trails and in waterways.
  • Safety standards and precautions pertaining to the use of tools, equipment and use of pesticides and herbicides.
Skill in:
  • Estimating time and materials needed to complete jobs.
  • Communicating verbally and in writing to meet the needs of the audience.
  • Operating hand and power tools in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operating light to medium sized equipment such as various types of loaders, dump trucks, trenchers, tractors, stump grinders, excavators, and related equipment.

The Maintenance Technician III (Horticulture) position works in the Horticulture Division with the primary focus of work in leading and coordinating horticultural activities, irrigation installation and maintenance, greenhouse management, and lake and pond management for the City of Columbia Parks & Recreation Department. This position will lead and guide the work of seasonal staff, prioritize and schedule workloads, and ensure safety of staff and work sites. Candidate must possess or obtain a Missouri Certified Pesticide Applicator License within 6 months of hire. Applicant will maintain records of pesticide applications as required by Missouri Department of Agriculture for all pesticide applications with respect to landscapes and aquatic environments. Candidate will assist with the design, installation, and maintenance of automated irrigation systems for turf and landscape areas throughout the park system. This position assists with snow removal activities during the winter months. Candidate must possess the ability to properly operate equipment such as riding mowers, trucks and trailers, skid loaders, and other related equipment. Candidate must possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver\'s License within 6 months of hire; and maintain an excellent driving record.

This position is full-time with benefits and an annual salary ranging from $51,867 - $63,797 ($24.94 - $30.67 per hour).

Position hours are Monday to Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm with varying hours during the spring and summer seasons.
