Position Information





The Public Works-Operations and Maintenance Department is seeking three reliable individuals to work with our team at the entry-level position of Maintenance Aide for the Parks, Right-of-Way, and Trees divisions (1 position each).



This is a trainee position in the maintenance series of classifications. After appropriate training and experience, the Maintenance Aide could reasonably expect to be promoted to Maintenance Worker unless a permanent Maintenance Aide position has been established.



Under supervision, to perform a wide variety of unskilled and semi-skilled maintenance tasks in the routine operation of public facilities; to operate Type C power driven equipment; to perform related duties as required.







Class Characteristics



This is a trainee position in the maintenance series of classifications. After appropriate training and experience, the Maintenance Aide could reasonably expect to be promoted to Maintenance Worker unless a permanent Maintenance Aide position has been established.



Examples of Typical Job Functions (Illustrative Only)

Perform heavy routine manual labor in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sewers, buildings, parks, recreation areas and other municipal facilities. Load and unload material. Excavate and backfill trenches with appropriate hand tools. Clean gutters, drains and culverts. Rake leaves, clean grounds and assist in spraying. Cut weeds, clear brush and trim trees. Operate, clean and maintain basic tools and equipment used on the job. Perform related duties as assigned.




Qualifications





Knowledge of:





Use, maintenance and application of basic hand tools; safe work practices.



Ability to:



Perform heavy manual labor; Maintain and establish cooperative working relationships; Understand and carry out oral and written directions; Read and write at the level necessary to perform the above.


Education and Experience:





Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

If permanently assigned to Tree Maintenance:





Some paid experience in the maintenance of trees.



Required Licenses/Certifications :





Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.May drive dump truck and other similar Type C power driven equipment.
