Overview

Min Rate = $25.32 / Max Rate = $36.71 *Placement is in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Units Agreement.

An LPN/OR Technician/OB Technician (LPN/ORT/OBT) is a member of the WCC team who functions in two areas. He/she is a member of the WCC surgical team who acts as a primary scrub person and must be technically adept by handling the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary before, during and after the surgical procedure/vaginal delivery. He/she may also circulate under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. The LPN/ORT/OBT must be able to take call as scheduled, anticipate the needs of the surgeon, have excellent adaptation and coping skills, have excellent organizational skills and be a team-player. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to lift patient and equipment with assistance of other personnel without as need dictates. LPN/ORT/OBT must have excellent communication skills and maintains asepsis, supplies and inventory at all times. When caring for patients in the LPN capacity, the LPN/ORT/OBT provides direct patient care under the direction and supervision of a Registered Professional Nurse in accordance with the NYS Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, and the standards set by Nursing Services and the Nursing Practice Council. The LPN/ORT/OBT may function in both capacities within the same shift\xe2\x80\x94he/she will be assigned to the area that has a higher need during their shift.

Responsibilities

1. Ensures necessary equipment, supplies and instrumentation are available in a timely manner.

2. Identifies/utilizes appropriate methods of sterilization/disinfection.

3. Maintains principles of aseptic technique.

4. Sets up mayo stand, back table and delivery table to facilitate handling of instruments and supplies during surgical procedure/delivery of newborn (vaginal or C-section).

5. Functions as a scrubbed member of the surgical team, selecting/providing instrumentation appropriate for the patient\xe2\x80\x99s size/age.

6. Maintain a safe, infection-controlled environment by defined attire, traffic policies, universal precautions and isolation techniques.

7. Helps prepare room between patients in a timely manner.

8. Terminally cleans OR suite at the end of schedule.

9. Follows safety measures to protect patient and team members.

10. Provides assistance for the patient in cardiopulmonary arrest or malignant hyperthermia crisis.

11. Reads posted communication in a timely manner.

12. Delivers specimens to the Lab.

13. Assists in transporting patients when necessary.

14. Assists with ordering supplies, stocking supplies in OR and L&D room.

15. Assists with vaginal deliveries; admission of patients.

16. Maintains logs (refrigerator logs, QC logs, temperature logs).

17. Computer input of orders.

18. Assist with patient care within the WCC Department under the supervision of an RN. Assist other team members in patient care and/or delivery tasks.

19. Answers phone calls, assembles and maintains patient records and maintains security/privacy of labor and delivery areas.

20. Performs in a crisis and emergency (e.g. code 99, 66, code white) situations while maintaining a positive and calm approach.

21. Collects and records clinical/personal data and compiles statistical data as assigned.

22. Cleans the surgical scrub sinks daily. Restocks surgical scrub brushes. Empties and relines trash containers in all rooms.

23. Reports equipment that is out of order, empties linen and keeps corridors and supply rooms free from obstruction.

24. Cleans OR suites after use. This would include cleaning of infant warmer, wiping of all flat surfaces and putting room back together (suction, linen, instruments, etc.)

25. Collects blood samples from peripartum/antepartum patients via venipuncture or capillary methods.

a. Use two identifiers.

b. Informs the patient of the anticipated procedure.

c. Identifies indications for a specific size of venipuncture needle/collection device.

d. Identifies blood collection tubes for various specimens.

e. Identifies contraindications for areas of venipuncture.

f. Performs venipuncture using accepted technique.

g. Secures area of venipuncture with tape and dry dressing.

26. Supports fluctuation in patient care/unit needs by utilizing skills in other areas of the unit as needed. Works overtime when required.

27. Practices within the boundaries of the NYS Practice Act for Licensed Practical Nurses and provides care according to CVPH (generic & unit-specific) Standards of Care and Practice.

28. Assists in the assessment of physical, psychological and social dimension of patients under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse.

29. Assists in planning, implementation, evaluation and discharge of nursing care to achieve age-specific outcome goals for the patient(s) with various diagnoses under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse.

30. Provides nursing care to the patient requiring monitoring/intervention with \xe2\x80\x9cPoint of Care Testing\xe2\x80\x9d (e.g., fingersticks, stool/gastric testing), patient care devices, (e.g., PCA, Gemini, suction apparatus), input/output tubes/devices (e.g., NG tubes, urinary drains, surgical drains, enteral feeding tubes), and other such devices/treatments.

31. Documents/communicates nursing care provided to other health care providers through verbal reports and patient record(s) as dictated by policy/guidelines. Reports to Registered Professional Nurse.

32. Provides nursing care through utilization of the applicable technology (e.g. computer, patient lifts).

33. Participates in providing prioritized patient/family education.

34. Provides nursing care for the patient requiring pain management (surgical, chronic and terminal) according to organization and unit standards.

35. Provides nursing care to the patient requiring medication administration to include controlled substances within scope of LPN practice; Utilizes the pyxis system as required.

36. Assists the Registered Nurse providing care for the patient requiring blood/blood product therapy or with central venous catheter.

37. Provides nursing care for the patient requiring preventive skin care, wound management, pressure injury prevention/treatment and stoma care.

38. Provides nursing care to the patient requiring various respiratory therapy modalities such as oxygen therapy and use of the inspirometer.

39. Provides nursing care for the patient with a tracheostomy and/or requiring suctioning (nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, or tracheal).

40. Provides nursing are for the patient requiring specimens.

41. Provides nursing care to the patient requiring restraints/protective/supportive devices, wandering/elopement, seizure and suicide precautions, and the patient on fall protocol.

42. Demonstrates respect for the diversity of patient population providing comprehensive holistic care for the dying patient, including post mortem care and support of the patient\xe2\x80\x99s spirituality.

43. Provides nursing care within the scope of the LPN to the patient requiring peripheral IV therapy (e.g., continuous, intermittent, IVPB) or solution/medication (e.g., TPN, PPN, lipid infusions, medicated drips).

44. Provides nursing care for the patient requiring procedures/interventions to include lumbar puncture, chest tube insertion, thoracentesis, liver biopsy, bone marrow, etc.

45. Provides care using infection control practices as outlined in CVPH policies/procedures (e.g., Universal Standard Precautions and Isolation Techniques).

46. Advocates for patient rights and demonstrates working knowledge of Advance Directive practices, organ donation and procurement as evidenced by completion of documentation as outlined by CVPH policy/procedures.

47. Manages conflict/identifies ethical dilemmas and assists the Registered Nurse in resolving.

48. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Skills Required: * Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing.

  • Currently licensed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in New York State.
  • Previous experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with other healthcare team members.
  • Meets requirements of physical/pre-employment screening and physical.
  • Excellent attendance record required.
  • Possess basic windows knowledge.
  • Must be able to take call as scheduled.
  • Must be self-motivated and technically adept.
  • Able to handle a high stress level.
  • Must be able to stand for prolonged periods.
  • BLS Certified preferred or obtain within six months of hire.
  • Knowledge of technical OR equipment and/or Anatomy & Physiology.
  • Knowledge of inputting physician orders\xe2\x80\x94supply orders preferred.
  • Proof of 15 hours of continuing education yearly.
As applicable, the individual has training/competency in attending the special needs and/or behaviors appropriate to the age of the patients for which care is being provided
