Local Counsel - Subrogation Litigation Attorney



Position Overview



We're seeking an experienced litigation attorney to serve as Local Counsel for our high-volume subrogation and third party liability recovery practice across multiple jurisdictions including Hawaii, California, Oregon, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, Texas and Utah. This role requires deep knowledge of state-specific civil procedure, exceptional courtroom presence, and the ability to manage tactical litigation execution while coordinating with a centralized legal strategy team. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments, excels at courtroom advocacy, and can seamlessly navigate varying jurisdictional requirements while maintaining consistent quality across initially dozens and eventually hundreds of active cases.

Core Responsibilities



Court Appearances & Advocacy



Appear at all status hearings, scheduling conferences, and routine motion hearings Handle motion practice including arguments on motions to dismiss, discovery disputes, and summary judgment Conduct settlement conferences with opposing counsel and court mediators Present oral arguments on substantive legal issues Manage emergency relief applications including TRO hearings and expedited motions

Trial Representation & Execution



Lead trial advocacy as first chair for bench and jury trials Conduct witness examinations including direct, cross, and expert witness testimony Present opening statements and closing arguments Manage trial exhibits and evidence presentation Coordinate with PIC legal team on trial strategy and witness preparation Handle post-trial motions and judgment enforcement proceedings

Local Procedure Compliance



Ensure strict adherence to state-specific civil procedure rules in licensed jurisdictions Navigate local court rules, standing orders, and individual judge preferences in states where practicing Maintain current knowledge of jurisdiction-specific requirements including service methods, filing deadlines, and discovery limits Advise PIC team on local practice variations that impact case strategy Build and maintain relationships with court clerks and local bar members in active jurisdictions Stay current on rule changes and local practice updates in licensed states Coordinate with other local counsel in jurisdictions where not licensed

Discovery Management & Depositions



Conduct depositions of parties, witnesses, and experts via Zoom and in-person Defend depositions when opposing counsel seeks discovery from our clients Appear at discovery conferences to resolve disputes File and argue protective motions when facing improper discovery requests Coordinate with medical experts for claim relatedness analysis Manage discovery scheduling within court-imposed deadlines

Response Period & Case Monitoring



Monitor defendant response deadlines (21 days federal, varies by state) Determine hearing types for small claims matters (status vs. mediation vs. trial) Track court-specific response timelines and procedural requirements Coordinate with PIC team on response strategy for motions and pleadings Ensure compliance with scheduling orders and court-imposed deadlines Provide real-time updates on case developments and court rulings

Emergency Response & After-Hours Coverage



Provide 24/7 availability for emergency court matters and TRO applications Handle urgent client communications requiring immediate legal action Coordinate rapid response with PIC team for time-sensitive filings Manage ex parte applications and emergency relief proceedings Navigate after-hours filing procedures and emergency judge protocols

Filing & Service Oversight



Oversee mechanical filing process to ensure compliance with local requirements Monitor summons issuance and service of process execution Validate proof of service filing and cure any deficiencies Coordinate with process servers and filing services Troubleshoot service problems and implement alternative service methods when necessary

Technical Requirements



Jurisdictional Expertise



Active bar admission in one or more of the following: California, Oregon, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, or Utah Pro hac vice experience in multiple jurisdictions Federal court admission in relevant districts Understanding of multi-jurisdictional practice management Strong preference for small claims court experience

Litigation Technology



Proficiency with Filevine or similar case management systems Experience with Zoom and remote deposition platforms Familiarity with electronic court filing systems across multiple jurisdictions Ability to navigate varying e-filing platforms and requirements Comfort with cloud-based document collaboration tools

Required Qualifications



Education & Experience



Juris Doctor from ABA-accredited law school Active bar membership in good standing in one or more of the following: California, Oregon, Arizona, Florida, Michigan, or Utah Minimum 5 years litigation experience with substantial courtroom time Small claims court experience preferred Proven track record of first-chair trial experience (minimum 10 trials) Healthcare litigation, insurance defense, or subrogation experience strongly preferred Experience managing high-volume caseloads (50+ active matters)
