Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

These positions are represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and are subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
HOURS OF WORK: Hours vary; Monday through Sunday; Between 5:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.
LOCATION: Dimond Pool: 2909 W 88th Avenue

These are regular part-time positions working 38 hours per week.

Example of Duties

Under supervision, this position serves as a lead person, provides lifesaving services and maintains aquatic facilities as required; provides supervision of participants to ensure the safety of all persons using the Municipal swimming or waterfront area; communicates information to coworkers, immediate supervisor and the public; provides a wide variety of water safety instruction to children and adults; responsibilities also include performing facility and ground security and performing duties related to maintaining swimming pool and waterfront water quality standards. Must be certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding and CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and certified as an instructor or instructor trainer in the same to include first aid, Water Safety Instructor or equivalent. High School graduate or equal, 18 years of age. Certified Pool or Aquatic Facility Operator. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and one (1) year lifeguard experience and experience as a swim instructor.

All applicants must possess and/or obtain.

\xc2\xb7 American Red Cross First Aid Certification at time of hire.

\xc2\xb7 American Red Cross Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Professional Rescuers at time of hire.

\xc2\xb7 American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification at time of hire.

\xc2\xb7 American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification or 2 years teaching experience in swimming at time of hire.

\xc2\xb7 Certified Pool/spa Operator Certification or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification at time of hire.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of current American Red Cross (or equivalent) Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for Professional Rescuers Certifications.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will also be conditional based upon a satisfactory municipal employment office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans who wish to be considered for an interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D, must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran or similar document. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration. An individual currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wishes to be considered for an interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual\'s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
