Under the supervision of a Supervising Registered Nurse (SRN) II/III in a Correctional Facility (CF) and the clinical guidance of a Registered Nurse (RN), CF, the LVN provides basic nursing care to incarcerated patients in a secure environment. The role emphasizes medication administration, patient monitoring, and adherence to the "Six Patient Rights" (right patient, drug, dose, route, time, and documentation). LVNs work in high-security settings, including clinics, receiving/release areas, and bedside units, contributing to a multidisciplinary team focused on public safety and health compliance. Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, with opportunities for overtime.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care and Assessment
:
Perform routine nursing procedures, including dressing superficial injuries, conducting visual and auditory acuity measurements, and administering tuberculin skin tests in Receiving and Release (R&R) areas.
Observe and report physiological and psychosocial changes in patients; document findings in electronic health records.
Assist in activities of daily living (ADLs), routine treatments, and health education for patients/youth, promoting self-care within scope of practice.
Collect vital signs, gather health complaints, and notify RNs or physicians of abnormal findings.
Medication and Treatment Administration
:
Administer oral, intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intravenous medications/injections per physician orders, following strict correctional protocols.
Prepare and distribute medications, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and facility standards.
Count narcotics at shift changes and report discrepancies immediately.
Clinical Support and Collaboration
:
Set up medical equipment and assist with procedures under RN supervision.
Participate in case management, treatment planning, and discharge planning for incarcerated individuals.
Maintain a safe, clean environment; adhere to infection control, sanitation, and emergency response protocols in a correctional context.
Collaborate with physicians, psychiatrists, correctional officers, and multidisciplinary teams to ensure coordinated care.
Documentation and Reporting
:
Accurately record patient interactions, treatments, and progress in compliance with California Board of Vocational Nursing standards and the Correctional facilities policies.
Report symptoms, reactions, and changes in patient condition to supervisors promptly.
Compliance and Quality Assurance
:
Follow departmental policies, medical protocols, and legal scope of practice; participate in quality improvement activities.
Oversee unlicensed staff (e.g., CNAs) in basic tasks when assigned.
Required Qualifications
Education
: Graduation from an accredited LVN program approved by the California Board of Vocational Nursing and Psychiatric Technicians (BVNPT).
Licensure/Certification
:
Current, valid California LVN license (unencumbered and active).
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
Valid IV certification preferred for medication administration.
Experience
:
Minimum 3+ years of experience as a Licensed Vocational Nurse is required.
Skills and Abilities
:
Strong knowledge of nursing practices, including bedside care, medications, treatments, and gerontology.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse patient populations, including those with mental health needs.
Ability to work under pressure in a secure environment; basic computer skills for documentation.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred due to patient demographics.
