This is a professional level job where the candidate must possess, upon hire, extensive knowledge and skills in Library Science so they can apply this knowledge to provide services and program consultation to library patrons, boards, and management. The candidate may be responsible for a major service of the State Library system. May assist in preparing and administering the program budget. Will supervise professional staff. May consult and help librarians in book selection and weeding; assist in contract negotiations with local and county governments; may be responsible for hiring and evaluating extension service employees. May conduct on-line database searching. May plan and organize the work of a major specialized service area; select specialized equipment and supplies;
supervise all correspondence from library patrons, and regional libraries; supervise storage, retrieval, and maintenance of specialized books. May work with local, state and national agencies serving the blind and physically handicapped. May classify library materials in
either the Dewey Decimal, Library of Congress, or other classification systems; may perform descriptive and subject cataloging; create original cataloging input for the OCLC or other computerized cataloging systems. May perform a wide variety of professional
activities in accordance with an established performance plan; develop and conduct training programs; prepare reports and correspondence on library activities; purchase and assemble library materials for addition to library collections.
