Job Description

The Utah Department of Corrections is looking for an experienced Librarian I, with exceptional organization skills and a willingness to want to help others. Under supervision of the Library Director, the Librarian I will provide library services to an offender population in a correctional setting. This job requires professional knowledge of library services and practices. You will perform duties in support of the libraries including (but not limited to) reference work, processing library materials, collection development and readers advisory. May supervise and train offender workers, community volunteers and interns.



Principle Duties:

Ensure the offender libraries are fully operational for scheduled use. Assist offender patrons in learning the library rules, using the library computer and finding materials. Check incoming materials for accuracy in cataloging and labeling. Perform library reference work. Make recommendations about library materials to be purchased. Take requests for new materials from offenders, teachers and therapeutic staff. Collect accurate stats on library use. Transport materials between libraries. Check incoming donations for unauthorized materials and to determine use. Develop new ideas and contribute to library improvements and outreach efforts. Handle special projects as assigned by the Librarian III.

The work schedule for this position will require some evenings and may require some weekends. The schedule will be finalized after training is completed.



Ideal Candidate:

Has professional work experience in a library program. Works well with a diverse population. Can work independently. Deals with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism. Has experience using word processing, spreadsheet programs and library management software.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

Bachelors degree in Library Science or a related field. Three years of progressively responsible experience in a library which involved performing various library support activities (circulation work, reference work, etc.) Knowledge of library terminology, practices, policies and procedures, and an understanding of the organization of library materials. Experience supervising volunteers, interns or employees. Experience working with law enforcement, jails or the courts.


Library Mission



Our mission is to provide high quality library services and materials that satisfy the educational, therapeutic and recreational needs of our offender patrons.



Goals:

Providing a diverse and updated collection of reference and reading materials. Giving each patron the opportunity to access the library once a week. Creating an environment where our patrons will wat to become life-long library users. Creating partnerships with prison programs to ensure our offenders' needs are met.

There are five libraries at the Utah State Correctional Facicility that ranges from minimum to maximum security. Our libraries directly serve over 3,000 offender patrons in these facilities, and indirectly provide services for approximately 500 maximum-security offenders. We employ offender workers to help with circulation, shelving, book repair and reference work.



In FY2018 over 82,000 items were loaned and there were over 47,000 offender visits to the libraries. On average, 59% of offenders used the libraries on at least a monthly basis.

The Librarian l needs to possess the following skills, knowledge, and abilities:



Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and writing. Communicate information and ideas effectively in speech and in writing so others willunderstand. Use logic and reasoning to identify and solve problems. Know how to categorize and organize information. Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate forthe situation when learning or teaching new things. Monitoring/Assessing performance of yourself, other individuals, or organizations tomake improvements or take corrective action. Use of proper time management. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning,resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership technique, production methods, and coordination of people and resources. Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, stenography and transcription, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge of electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming. Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

Risks found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental stress situations, being subject to possible physical attack, etc. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand, walk, pull, push, bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift and/or carry moderately
