Job Highlights
This is a unique opportunity for a public health scientist to join the Washington State Department of Labor & Industries\' Occupational Epidemiology Program at SHARP. The SHARP Program is a nationally recognized occupational safety and health research group. Washington is unique in its capacity to carry out workplace injury and illness surveillance and research and prevention studies to guide employer and employee safety programs and inform public health policy. The research disciplines at SHARP include epidemiology, industrial hygiene, ergonomics, safety, occupational medicine and others.

As an Epidemiologist 1, you will develop case definitions and perform biostatistical analyses of workers compensation claims and hours data, and DOSH WISHA Inspection Network (WIN) data, to identify risks for common occupational injuries and illnesses and workplace inspections, respectively. You will conduct epidemiologic analysis and write the publication of results to support SHARP and the agency\xe2\x80\x99s safety and health activities.

Duties
Some of what you\xe2\x80\x99ll do:

  • Develop standardized definitions of common, high cost injuries and illness in Washington State.
  • Maintain system to track occupational heat exposure.
  • Conduct analyses to evaluate trends and assess relationships between occupational exposures and injuries or illnesses (e.g., heat exposure and work-related musculoskeletal disorder).
  • Conduct regression modeling to identify employers at risk for future workers\xe2\x80\x99 compensation claims.
  • Develop and maintain occupational health surveillance systems, and validate cases using multiple data sources.
  • Publish annual reports to legislature for work-related musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Prepare reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts to communicate scientific results.
  • Present research results at state and national scientific meetings.

Qualifications
REQUIRED:
  • Master of Public Health in Epidemiology, with 12 hours of coursework in biostatistics and 12 hours of coursework in epidemiology
And At least one year of public health research experience with research demonstrating biostatical techniques such as correlation/regression techniques. Or Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree in public health with concentration in epidemiology And At least three years of public health research experience with research demonstrating biostatical techniques such as correlation/regression techniques.
  • Experience with programming in database management and statistical software, such as SAS, R, Stata, and/or SQL.

DESIRED:
  • Applied epidemiology experience and/or public health coursework in occupational epidemiology.
  • Experience with occupational health surveillance systems.
  • Strong data analysis skills and working knowledge of data visualization software, such as Microsoft Excel and Power BI.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in verbal and written communications.
