Job Description

This is a non-partisan position, and the expectation is that the successful candidate will remain free from political party affiliation, bias, or designation the duration of the appointment.

Salary: $23.62/hour
Telework: This position will work on-site in the Minnesota Capitol.
Days of Work/Hours: Monday-Friday/8am-5pm. This position requires long and irregular hours during the legislative session, including occasional evening and weekend work.
Appointment Type: Full-time/Temporary
Appointment Duration: This position will start in January with an anticipated end date of late May 2026.
Department: Senate Journal Office
Reports to: Director of Journal Production
Closing Date: This position will be open until December 12 at 4pm.
Position Summary
The Legislative Assistant within the Journal Department will serve as a proofreader for the daily Senate journals. The Journal Office supports the mission of the Senate through publishing the daily Senate documents used during Session, including Senate agendas, bill introductions, consent calendar, general orders, and Senate journals. This position will work closely with the Director and Assistant Director of Journal Production.
An ideal candidate will have an interest in the legislative process. We seek someone who has a high attention to details with strong written communication skills to effectively proofread and review documents.
In this temporary position, you will not be eligible for health benefits. However, you will be eligible for holiday pay, deferred compensation, our employee assistance program (EAP), staff parking, and Metro Transit options.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Political Science, Social Science, Public Policy, Business Administration, English, Writing, or related area of study.
OR
One (1) year of experience in proofreading, editing, reviewing documents, government experience, legislative process experience, or related.
In addition to the qualifications listed above, applicants must demonstrate:

  • Ability to work in a non-partisan capacity, supporting all members and staff regardless of party affiliation or position.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail with strong written communication skills to effectively proofread, copy edit, check spelling and grammar, and review documents.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Ability to complete a variety of administrative tasks, including filing and data entry.
Competencies
  • Ability to balance conflicting demands and tasks.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate with Senate staff and members.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access, and Excel)
