Job Description

Youth for a Better Future (YBF) is searching for an exceptional educator (Learning Specialist or Teacher) to pilot our After School Homework Help (ASHH) program at Manierre Elementary School. ASHH at Manierre runs Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30 - 5:30 pm when Chicago Public Schools (CPS) are in session. Assistance is to students ages 6 years and up.

After School Homework Help offers a safe, dependable space where up to 30 students in grades K-8 receive help developing essential academic, social, and emotional skills. We insist that students substantially complete their homework or an academic worksheet before engaging in games or craft projects. We feel that significant social /emotional growth takes place when students are participating in the real world. Therefore, the use of technology is strictly limited during ASHH. Instead, students are encouraged to play board games, engage in imaginative play, build with Lego, draw, sculpt, color-in short, anything that helps children develop social competencies, pre-academic skills, and emotional regulation.

Daily Schedule Tuesdays and Thursdays:



3:00 - 3:30 Prepare materials and space, meet with interns to discuss plans for the day

3:30 - 4:00 Welcome students (sign-in, socialize, snack)

4:00 - 4:40 Quiet work time (homework, YBF worksheet, tutoring)

4:10 - 4:40 Quiet games and crafts for students who have completed homework/worksheet

4:40 - 5:00 Active group games or projects

5:00 - 5:10 Clean up and reset space

5:10 - 5:30 Read aloud and dismissal

5:30 - 6:00 Staff debrief and student evaluations

Key responsibilities:



Believing that all students can and will be successful at ASHH Practicing a growth mindset about oneself and all others at ASHH Believing that board games benefit students more than video games Staying flexible so that the ASHH program can innovate and evolve over time Attending ASHH sessions punctually and dependably Using best practices to manage student behavior and create a safe, warm, demanding, and joyful after-school environment for up to 30 students K-8 Communicating with Manierre teachers to define success and set specific, ambitious goals for each ASHH student at the start of every semester (August and January) Selecting or preparing skill-level appropriate worksheets for students each day to help students meet their academic goals Confirming all students are signed in and out Tutoring individual students during ASHH sessions Tracking student progress weekly and summarizing student progress in January and May Sharing student progress assessments with Manierre staff in January and May Ensuring games and craft activities are available to students at every ASHH session Directing, overseeing, and meeting with ASHH program interns and volunteers to ensure that program objectives are being met Collaborating with the YBF Program Manager to collect and analyze ASHH program data Liaison between schools and children to provide enrichment space for those who have learning difficulties.

Supervisory Responsibilities:



Paid interns and volunteers to maintain a minimum adult:student ratio of 1:5 during ASHH (ideal ratio of adults: students is 1:3)

Qualifications:



Bachelor's degree (required) At least five years of teaching experience, preferably serving a wide range of ages Two or more years of prior success teaching in urban communities (strongly preferred) A cleared CPS Background check before the first day of employment

Compensation:



1099 $30-$40/hour, 2 sessions/week based on experience related to role and responsibilities
Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $30.00 - $40.00 per hour

Expected hours: 4 per week

Work Location: In person
