The Opportunity:

As a Lead Staff Software Engineer - Cloud on the team, you will lead a team of software engineers and contribute significantly to building the releases of next generation of cloud-based product subsystem and system design. It provides huge opportunities to work at all levels from the front-end user experience to a set of robust platform services. You should be somebody who enjoys development and working on complex system software and is passionate about building quality software as well as achieving operational excellence. Location is Lake Forest, IL (Conway Park).

The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable track record of success delivering new products. The candidate should be a critical contributor to building compelling informatics products within Abbotts Diagnostics Division.

The individual will develop software on informatics programs from concept through launch. She/he will also be responsible for supporting on-market products post-launch.

What You\xe2\x80\x99ll Work On:
  • The individual should lead design and development of software code, unit tests and integration tests for a subsystem. Should provide guidance to the development team on design & development.
  • She/he should work closely with product development team to establish product development goals while ensuring market compatibility. Should possess strong technical abilities and able to suggest multiple solutions to problems.
  • She/he should continuously monitor and review all code committed to one or more subsystems for quality, compliance, and design adherence. Should lead implementation for high-complexity, mission-critical features, and capabilities.
  • She/he should oversee continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) design of one or more subsystems.
  • An individual should provide technical feasibility assessment to System Engineer on emerging user needs and product requirements. Should review software requirements as a technical subject matter expert.
  • An individual Evaluates multiple design options, leads proof-of-concepts and proposes optimal design solutions compatible with the software system architecture.
  • She/he should author developer guides, operating procedures, and design documents for one or more subsystems.
  • She/he should lead root cause investigations on high-complexity or high severity issues. Should participate in corrective and preventative action assessments as participant of CAPA activities.
  • An individual should monitor execution, identify risks before they manifest and be able to propose mitigation to ensure delivery.
  • She/he should be capable of leading multiple feature teams as a software engineering leader. An individual should have effective communication and presentation skills.
  • She/he should serve as a technical expert and supervise or provide technical mentorship to junior engineers. Should be able to explains the system to them and ensures that they understand their areas of responsibility.
  • An individual should follow defined software development lifecycle procedures and Abbott\'s quality system procedures. Should identify and implement improvements to local procedures.
  • The individual must have prior experience operating in Scrum-based development teams.
  • The individual will interact with program managers, project managers, product owners and R&D leadership on project scope, timeline, risks and budget.
  • The individual will work as part of cross-functional teams to deliver informatics products.
  • The individual may travel occasionally per needs of the assigned project.
  • The individual is responsible for the design and development of informatics products in compliance with internal policies and procedures, both US and Foreign regulatory standards and requirements.
Required Qualifications

Education: B.S. in Computer Science or similar engineering discipline including Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering is required. MS is preferred. M.S. in Computer Science or Software Engineering or Electrical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering is preferred.

Experience: Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree and 8-10 years of related experience covering the entire software lifecycle in a team-oriented environment or a master\xe2\x80\x99s degree and 6+ years of experience covering the entire software lifecycle in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred / Ideal Qualifications:
  • The candidate must have experience in developing and launching unique software / informatics products in one of the following industries: healthcare, defense or telecommunications.
  • Experience working with 2 (two) or more from the following: web application development, Unix/Linux environments, mobile application development, distributed and parallel systems, machine learning, information retrieval, natural language processing, networking, developing large software systems, and/or security software development.
  • Experience with cloud technologies such as Amazon Web Service, Azure Cloud or Google Cloud is preferred
  • Expertise in web development, HTML & DOM, CSS, JavaScript and Web components (Shadow DOM)
  • Single-page web app using a web framework such as React, Vue or Svelte
  • Hands-on experience with a programming language such as JavaScript (Node.js), C#, Rust or Golang.
  • Hands-on experience with RDBMS, preferably PostgreSQL
  • Strong experience in Container Management Technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) is preferred.
  • Experience building Restful web service APIs is highly desirable.
  • The candidate should have deep understanding with unit, integration and functional testing practices, source control (Git preferred), and best software engineering practices.
