Performs laboratory tests and associated support work as directed by the Laboratory Manager, Supervisor, and Chief Operating Officer. Cooperates and communicates professionally with the medical and nursing staff, and hospital personnel. Uses technical knowledge to effectively make sound clinical decisions concerning lab issues and to troubleshoot instruments. As the Lead Technologist, oversight of departmental duties will be their responsibility. Departmental duties includes: maintaining the maintenance, inventory, and QC logs, monitor proper gram stain and culture setups, review and monitor proper specimen collection and determination of further testing beyond the initial culture. Essential Key Job Responsibilities
Provides appropriate age specific and culturally oriented patient care to population served.
Maintains all laboratory equipment. Operates equipment safely and correctly.
Performs quality control testing and instrument checks, then documents results.
Always observes standard precautions.
Notifies nursing unit or physician of all critical test values immediately.
Professionally interacts with all Lab employees, physicians, other hospital employees, administration, and the Pathologist.
Verifies that proper specimen is being analyzed for the proper patient and the ordered test.
Always maintains patient confidentiality.
Alters or adjusts methods and procedures for neonates, pediatrics, adults and geriatrics.
Maintains regulatory requirements.
Participates in performance improvement activities for the Laboratory.
Documents correct information for statistics and billing.
Documents all lab results in Meditech system.
Stocks and orders supplies as needed.
Centrifuges specimens to separate cells from sediment, serum, or supernatant fluids.
Centrifuges blood specimens; types of blood and cross matches blood specimens.
Performs venipunctures, nasal swabs, and finger sticks using aseptic technique and with as little patient discomfort as possible.
Role Minimum Qualifications
Required Education
Bachelor's degree from an approved school of medical laboratory technology.
Required Licensure and Certifications -Post Hire
Certified as an MLS (Medical Laboratory Scientist) from a national certifying agency (ASCP, AMT) preferred.
Candidates eligible for Certification must attempt BOC exam a minimum of 2 times per year and provide evidence of attempts. Failure to do so may result in an evaluation of employment at HMH.
Failure to obtain certification will result in an evaluation of employment, including salary, job duties and shifts.
CEU's for those accredited after 2004.
