Position Overview

The Osage Oracle is seeking a skilled

Lead Newspaper Reporter

to guide our local news coverage and produce engaging stories for Mitchell County and the surrounding region. This part-time role is ideal for an experienced journalist who cares deeply about community reporting, accurate storytelling, and being an active part of the Osage area. As we grow, this position has strong potential to expand into a full-time newsroom role.

Key Responsibilities

Write consistent, high-quality news stories each week, focusing on local government, schools, features, and breaking/localized news. Attend public meetings such as city council, county, and school board sessions. Develop and maintain strong community connections and reliable sources. Pitch story ideas and contribute to weekly editorial planning. Assist with fact-checking, basic editing, and ensuring overall content accuracy. Capture photos and additional digital assets to support your stories. Post stories online promptly and help maintain The Osage Oracle's digital presence. Work closely with the editor and publisher to ensure weekly deadlines are met. Uphold strong journalistic ethics and a positive, community-focused approach.

Qualifications

Required:

Prior newspaper or community journalism experience. Strong writing, interviewing, and storytelling abilities. Ability to manage multiple assignments independently and work on deadline. Comfort covering government and public meetings. Ability to take clear and usable photographs. Solid digital skills, including uploading web content and using social media. Must work on-site in Osage, Iowa and be part of the community. Familiarity with Mitchell County and local issues is a bonus.
