About the Office
The United States Attorney for the District of Utah is responsible for prosecuting all federal crimes committed within the district, including acts of terrorism, white-collar crime, organized crime, criminal gang activities, internet-related crimes, drug offenses and other criminal acts. The Office also defends the United States, its agencies, officers, and employees in civil actions; enforces the regulatory authority of federal agencies, and recovers funds from individuals who violate criminal, civil and regulatory laws. The Office is divided into two divisions: the Criminal Division and Civil Division. The Criminal Division is divided into five sections: Appellate, National Security, Drugs, White Collar, and Violent Crimes.

Interns will be assigned projects in both the Criminal and Civil Divisions to provide them with experience in a wide range of practice areas and with a variety of different Assistant U.S. Attorneys (AUSAs). Interns will conduct legal research and prepare legal pleadings, memoranda, and briefs. Interns will also prepare answers to habeas corpus petitions for filing in court. Interns are encouraged to attend brown bag lunches which are sponsored by the office and which feature AUSAs speaking on various legal topics. The office also encourages interns to attend court proceedings handled by AUSAs to view civil and criminal trials and hearings and gain a better understanding of the federal legal system. The office goals are to introduce interns to the federal legal system, develop their legal research and writing skills, and provide a challenging and rewarding internship experience.
Qualifications
First-year (second semester), second- and third-year law students. Law school graduates are not eligible for summer positions. Must be a U.S. citizen and will be subject to a background investigation due to the sensitive nature of the work performed by the United States Attorney's Office.
