Land-Based Programs Assistant
Brief Description
The position of land-based programs assistant is responsible for maintaining the grounds and assisting with all aspects of organic farming, forestry management, and land-based systems' maintenance.
Sample Tasks
Assist with forestry and farming work that involves . We strive to use human labor rather than machinery as often as possible to reduce our carbon impact. Heavy lifting will include trimming, cutting, and moving large trees, as well as processing/chipping downed trees over a 200+ acre parcel, lifting and moving rocks, carrying water, moving large amounts of soil, etc.
Maintaining gardens, including planting, fertilizing, weeding, soil conditioning and mulching.
Assist with planting new crops, and maintaining and harvesting existing crops, using farming equipment such as tractors and other small machinery.
Ensuring the maintenance of a safe work area, with clear pathways.
Utilize safe practices while operating mowers, basic hand and power tools, tractors, and tractor attachments.
Assist with the building of trails.
Preparing outdoor areas for safety in various weather conditions.
Carry out inspections of the forest and growing areas to identify and resolve potential issues.
Assist building team with maintenance of buildings, when needed.
Assist with snow and ice Removal.
Assisting organizational staff with large events, as needed.
Other duties as assigned by the Land-Based Programs Manager, Operations Manager, or the Executive Director.
Qualifications and requirements
Proficient with Chain Saw and other tree related equipment.
Understanding of tree work safety, chainsaw safety training, or willingness to acquire training.
Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more repeatedly throughout the day, on a daily basis.
Able to comfortably perform rigorous outdoor tasks on a daily basis.
Willing to work on their feet, outside, throughout the day, in all seasons.
Ability to operate small outdoor equipment, such as a chipper, zero turn mower, etc.
Ability to think systemically and ecologically.
Willingness to learn culturally relevant permaculture protocols.
Willingness to adhere to the relational values of the organization as they pertain to the land at all times.
Knowledge of basic gardening skills, with willingness to learn more.
Adaptability and willingness to help wherever help is needed.
Must have respectful communication skills and be able to take direction.
Must be able to work independently on assigned tasks.
Ability to work additional days during events hosted by the organization.
High School Diploma or equivalent
Driver's license
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to follow direction and to complete tasks in a timely manner
Preferred
Knowledge of small engine maintenance and repair.
Ability to drive a tractor and change implements.
Construction/handy-man experience.
Trail making/maintenance experience.
Bonus: GIS mapping skills.

Line of Communication -The land-based programs assistant reports to the Land-Based Programs Manager.
Compensation: This position is a 32 hours per week position on average, with some additional days, hours required during events, starting salary is: $30hr, plus benefits.
