The Laboratory Technical Consultant provides comprehensive technical oversight for all PROXIMITY LAB SERVICES testing locations, including physician clinics, designated hospitals, and point-of-care sites. This role ensures laboratory operations meet CLIA, Joint Commission, and organizational standards through quality monitoring, personnel training, policy development, and regulatory compliance. The position requires travel to all testing sites and hands-on performance of laboratory procedures in competency-assessed sections.
Core Responsibilities
Quality & Compliance Oversight
Monitors quality control programs, proficiency testing, and performance improvement initiatives across all sites. Develops and implements corrective actions as needed. Ensures all testing personnel follow CLIA, Joint Commission, TMFHC, and OSHA regulations. Prepares documentation for CLIA inspections with Laboratory Director approval.
Technical Operations
Provides technical oversight for instrument calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Oversees method correlation studies and verifies accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, reportable ranges, and reference ranges per manufacturer specifications. Reviews critical and abnormal values for regional laboratories and clinics.
Training & Competency
Orients and educates clinic and testing personnel on laboratory policies, procedures, and testing methods. Conducts initial and annual competency assessments. Delivers point-of-care testing instruction through in-person sessions, online modules, or video recordings.
Policy Development
Writes and updates policies and procedures for new and existing tests. Maintains testing manuals with annual reviews at minimum. Ensures all documentation reflects current regulatory requirements and age-specific standards.
Site Support
Conducts scheduled on-site visits to clinic and affiliated hospital laboratories. Provides on-site and remote assistance for point-of-care testing locations. Participates in laboratory supervisory and staff meetings. Completes special projects as assigned.
Education
Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training and experience meeting CLIA regulation 42 CFR 493.1489 requirements.
Experience
Required: Five years full-time experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist performing moderate or high complexity testing in the relevant section or area of responsibility.
Certification
Current MLT certification from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS required. Certifications with expiration dates must be maintained and kept current.
