Accessioning of samples:

Data Entry Identifying problems with specimen types, missing information and assigning the issue to the appropriate ancillary department or in some cases resolving them. This is a multi-discipline position with 3 primary components: specimen accessioning, sample splitting/sorting and data entry. Prepares laboratory specimens for designated departments/locations prior to laboratory analysis and testing and routes specimens by type to various staging areas. Performs all paperwork, technical and non-technical procedures required to process and submit specimens. Assigns specific computer generated identification numbers, checks for accuracy and records all items processed. Operates data entry terminals and automated data systems, follows standard sequences/coding when entering data and corrects, edits, and/or verifies data entered into automated systems.

Summary of Position:

The Accessioner is responsible for proper handling and processing of incoming laboratory specimens for analyzing in the Lab.

Responsibilities and Duties

Receives specimens from clients for processing
Verifies all specimens that come in are labeled appropriately and that they match the labels on the requisition to ensure that there are no issues with patient identity and reporting Prepares specimens received for testing in reference laboratory Enters patient demographics into the electronic medical record Reviews and Accessions specimens and testing orders for laboratory analysis Assists technologists and technicians with the operation of standard laboratory instruments Perform routine laboratory assistant duties according to agency standards and protocols Perform specimen or reception check, and records information into LIS~Z Performs proper storage of specimens after testing and properly discard according to SOPM Cleans work area, and surrounding laboratory after completion of work day Requisition Review and restock department daily

Qualifications and Skills

High School Diploma 1 year experience working in a similar role Must have excellent data entry skills Understanding of Laboratory quality control and assurance preferred
Knowledge of general laboratory safety issues and universal precautions

Prior Phlebotomy or Accessioning Experience Medical terminology and laboratory testing requirements, including the ability to differentiate different test tube types Data entry skills

1 year experience in laboratory accessioning required
