Job Summary




The Laboratory Assistant, under the general supervision of the Laboratory Director performs phlebotomy services across the life span, collects the appropriate specimen in a safe, accurate, and professional manner with the proper technique. The Assistant performs waived and moderately complex testing per established laboratory policies and procedures. The Laboratory Assistant is able to work independently and employ critical thinking skills demonstrated by competent troubleshooting abilities. The Laboratory Assistant operates and maintains laboratory equipment, ensures test accuracy through quality control, data record keeping, interprets results, and communicates findings to providers and healthcare teams. The Laboratory Asisstant is required to work three (3) scheduled days per month and be available for additional short notice call in.

Essential Functions



Proper specimen collection, to include un'ina preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, transportation, and storage of specimens according to laboratory policies Demonstrates competency to perform pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic assessment on all test procedures performed at the Dena'ina Wellness Center (DWC) Laboratory Adherence to established policies and procedures for all laboratory testing processes Identifies and resolves inconsistencies in un'ina results and work collaboratively to troubleshoot problems Resolve analytic discrepancies and ensure remedial action taken when test systems deviate from established performance guidelines and documentation is complete Communicates critical values to the provider following established protocol Report mandated information to the public health department or other designated officials Maintains laboratory equipment and analyzers to ensure quality control measures meet CLIA regulations Performs assigned proficiency, competency, and continuing education within established timelines Ensures compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies and TERO ordinance

Qualifications




Education

High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Experience

One year (1) of experience in a clinical laboratory setting

Preferred

Knowledge and experience working with cultural diversities Proficient phlebotomy skills across the life span

License/Certification

Must have a valid Alaska State driver's license and must remain insurable under the Tribe's policy

, or obtain within 90 days of hire

Medical Laboratory Assistant certification from American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or other comparable certification or be eligible to take the exam within twelve (12) months of hire Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or able to obtain within three (3) months of hire Phlebotomy certification, or other comparable certification or able to obtain within six (6) months

Special Skills

Proficiency with Microsoft Suite, or obtain training within 90 days of hire Conducts business in a service-oriented manner that is attentive, pleasant, respectful and kind when dealing with un'ina, visitors, co-workers and others Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively Knowledge and understanding of the developmental stages of patients throughout the continuum of life as they relate to the collection of specimens Knowledge of basic clinical processes to include pre-analytic and analytic factors that influence test results, medical terminology, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments, HIPPA and 42 CFR Inventory management of laboratory supplies to ensure adequate levels of inventory are maintained Ability to interact and communicate in a professional manner that promotes a harmonious environment, listen and respond to constructive criticism in a productive manner Strong oral and written communication skills, organizational skills with attention to detail Perform assigned proficiency, competency, and continuing education within established timelines Observe safety, infection control, and risk management policies and procedures

This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
