Key Accountabilities:
Obtains specimens from patients according to laboratory procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing.
Teaches patients proper collection techniques for patient-collected samples.
Analyzes patient samples following established procedures for accurate and reliable results.
Prepares patient specimens for transport to reference laboratories.
Records and reports test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
Maintains records of patient test results.
Protects patient confidentiality. Safeguards all patients' health information whether written, verbal, and electronic with privacy and confidentiality. Follow HIPAA Privacy and Security policies and procedures.
Follows all established laboratory policies and procedures.
Communicates with patients and members of the clinical team to obtain accurate patient information needed for interpretation of test results.
Makes and receives telephone calls related to lab testing procedures.
Assists with laboratory quality control and quality assurance activities and documents according to policy.
Adheres to OSHA requirements and established safety standards.
Follows laboratory's instrument calibration and preventive maintenance requirements and documents all procedures performed.
Follows laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within laboratories established acceptable levels of performance.
Documents all corrective action taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications.
Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance/results and makes corrections or notifies the Diagnostics Coordinator.
Verifies correct billing for lab procedures by checking the charges and reference lab bills.
Follows all applicable National Patient Safety Goals in the provision of patient care. (P&P #6030.30)
Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to any age-related needs of the patients served to their assigned area. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development appropriate to the patient population served. Must be able to assess and interpret data about the patient's status in order to identify each patient's needs and provide the appropriate care, including age-related care, needed by the patient group.
Orders supplies on a regular basis.

Education/Experience:
Phlebotomy techniques.
Basic laboratory skills and familiarity with lab procedures preferred
Associate degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician/equivalent and state licensure preferred, but not required.
One-year general lab experience preferred
Physical Requirements:
Standing, walking, climbing, balancing, bending, carrying, reaching, squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting, twisting, gripping, talking, typing, hearing/listening, seeing/observing.
Sedentary to light work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary to light work involves sitting approximately 75% of the time. Also, involves exerting up to 25 pounds of force intermittently or up to 50 pounds of force infrequently.
