SOME (So Others Might Eat) provides material aid and comfort to our vulnerable neighbors in the District of Columbia, helping them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness through programs and services that save lives, improve lives, and help to transform the lives of individuals and families, their communities, and the systems and structures that affect them. We meet immediate needs with food, clothing, and healthcare and offer the tools one needs to live with hope, dignity, and greater independence.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is currently seeking a Kitchen Aide to join our Dining Room department on O Street in NW Washington, DC.

Position Description: The Kitchen Aide coordinates daily food service for clients within the dining room for breakfast and lunch. Coordinates daily volunteer participation and work activities within the dining
room and kitchen area.

Covid-19 Considerations: In alignment with DC Health, COVID-19 vaccinations, and boosters are mandated for personnel working in SOME\'s healthcare-designated programs, which currently include Medical, Dental, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services (BHS), Exodus House, Jordan House, Kirwan House, Kuehner Place, Leland Place and Mary Claire House. Requests for a medical or religious exemption will be considered for a reasonable accommodation.

Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm (40 hours per week)

Qualifications

Required: 1-3 yrs. customer service experience, experience providing services to the homeless preferred

Required License/Certification: CPR/First-Aid

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Customer service skills to interact with clients
  • Time management skills with the ability to prioritize
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Able to communicate with diverse audiences
  • Flexibility with the ability to multi-task despite competing priorities
Expected Contributions: Dining Room and Volunteer Management
  • Oversee food and beverage service for clients
  • Act as dining room host including supervision of volunteers
  • Reset dining service and clean in between meals
  • Provide deep cleaning of the kitchen
  • Track meal count and client demographics for breakfast and lunch
  • Adhere to serving timeline and communicate timeline to volunteers
  • Bring in food donations and stock shelves
  • Organize groceries for Central Kitchen Program and package for delivery
  • Notify Public Safety employees when assistance is needed
  • Deliver meals to program sites as needed
  • Provide oversight of volunteer groups and deliver instruction to volunteers on work activities
Reports to: Dining Room Program Manager

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. May be required to stand for long periods
