Serves as judicial assistant to a Judge of the Circuit Court for Baltimore County. Ensures that efficient operations and procedures are implemented and followed for a judicial office. Exercises a high degree of independence and discretion in administrative management.
Essential Job Duties
Work under the general supervision of the judge who gives assignments in broad terms of the objectives desired.
Acts as intermediary in maintaining frequent contacts with other members of the local and state judiciary.
Reviews and brings to the attention of the judge those items which require his/her consideration and determination in his/her capacity as liaison judge with organizations within the county, state or national legal community.
Types opinions, letters, memoranda, orders, writs, waivers, narrative reports, and similar or related material as directed. Utilizes knowledge of legal terms and resources.
Drafts and types routine correspondence to the satisfaction of the judge.
Maintains all files in accordance with the court and judge's requirements.
Transfers court work product between the judge's chambers and various other departments in the Court.
Works closely with the Assignment Office regarding scheduling of cases on the Judge's docket.
Uses knowledge of court procedures to assist the judge.
Contacts parties in certain cases to schedule conferences with the Judge and assist the judge with moving all cases forward to final disposition.
Reports judge's list of subcuria cases into MDEC, as required for case management reports to AOC.
Receives incoming correspondence.
Reviews and makes decisions regarding office matters and works in conjunction with the judge's law clerk to accomplish various tasks as assigned by the judge.
Requests and maintains judge's personal, annual, medical and administrative leave in conjunction with the chambers of the administrative judge, the central assignment office and CONNECT.

Qualifications

High school diploma or or an appropriate high school equivalency, plus seven years of clerical or secretarial experience in a legal environment

Associates degree, plus five years of clerical or secretarial experience in a legal environment.

Must have a positive workplace attitude and the ability to professionally deal with confidential information.
Must have an in-depth knowledge of court procedures; exercise a high degree of judgment, tact, diplomacy and competence in dealing with judges, public officials, the public and professional personnel.
Must have a thorough knowledge of legal terminology, forms, methods and procedures.
Must have excellent computer skills and ability to effectively use the Microsoft Office suite of products including Word. Experience with the electronic filing of court documents is preferred such as knowledge of case management software, specifically Odyssey case management system, MDEC (Maryland Electronic Courts), CONNECT and GEARS.

- Monthly sick leave earnings prorated based on the number of hours worked per week. No maximum on accrual. Accrued balance can be applied toward service credit at retirement.

- Monthly vacation leave earnings prorated based on the number of hours worked per week. Earnings increase after five, ten and fifteen years of service generally.
Holidays
- Part-time 30 to 39 hour non-merit or non-classified employees will generally be paid for ten holidays per calendar year. Other part-time, non-merit or non-classified employees working 29 hours per week or less will receive two paid holidays per calendar year. These holidays are the Christmas holiday and the Independence Day holiday.
