The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking a Machinist Journeyperson. This position plays a critical role in maintaining the operational readiness and safety of Washington State Ferries' vessels and terminals. This position is responsible for performing skilled machinist work and marine diesel mechanic repairs in compliance with Federal, State, and U.S. Coast Guard regulations. Working both in the machine shop and in the field, the incumbent fabricates, repairs, and maintains vessel and terminal mechanical systems. This position also serves as part of an emergency response team, providing around-the-clock support for equipment failures to ensure the continuous operation of ferry services.

What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Journey-Level Machinist will:

  • Respond to equipment failures on vessels and terminals around the clock.
  • Work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Performs maintenance, repairs, exchanges, and overhauls on all vessel and terminal machinery and engines.
  • Repair and overhaul pumps such as sewage, water, fuel, oil transfer etc.
  • Operation of lathes, mills, drill press, presses and other typical machine shop equipment.
  • Precision alignment of pumps, shafts, couplings etc. with a dial indicator and alignment tooling.
  • Diagnose and repair hydraulic systems.
  • Stock and operate tool room and sign shop for Eagle Harbor Maintenance Facility.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
  • Machinist Proficiency
  • Journey-level skill demonstrated through apprenticeship or equivalent experience.
  • Mechanical Systems
  • Applies machining and repair techniques to industrial or marine equipment.
  • Work Planning
  • Follows instructions, manages tasks, and meets deadlines.
  • Teamwork & Independence
  • Works effectively alone or with others in varied settings.
  • Problem Solving
  • Identifies issues and implements practical solutions.
  • Safety & Physical Readiness
  • Meets physical, drug/alcohol testing, and respiratory fit requirements.
  • Credential Readiness
  • Holds valid driver's license and can obtain TWIC within 90 days.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
  • Rigging & Equipment Handling
  • Experience moving or installing heavy machinery in confined spaces.
  • Marine/Industrial Experience
  • Familiar with vessel or plant mechanical environments.
  • Commercial Driving
  • Holds or can obtain a CDL.
