Duties
Major Duties:
  • Provides guidance and assistance to systems programmers, analysts, operators, communications technicians, IT support staff and vendor personnel with unusual and non-routine technical problems.
  • Writes and maintains system documentation for network infrastructure installed in the IO data centers.
  • Participates in and may be required to independently accomplish cost benefit studies for the potential purchase of Network related hardware and software.
  • Prepares and reviews change requests through the use of automated tools for all modifications to hardware and software within the VA's network environment.
  • Evaluates the performance of all vendor representatives assigned to the site and prepares recommendations relative to continuance of contracts and/ or vendor representatives as appropriate.
  • Designs, develops, tests, and maintains specialized support software including utilities; restart/recovery routines, telecommunications interfaces, programmer and operator aids, shell script routines and performs security administration functions.
  • Configures Network Infrastructure such as core and access switches; firewalls; and load balancers within an Enterprise Data Center environment on a daily basis in support of customer needs.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8am - 4:30pm.

Basic Requirement:
EXPERIENCE: To qualify for this position, you must have information technology-related experience demonstrating all of the four competencies listed below. Specialized Experience for the GS-12: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: hands-on experience configuring network infrastructure and providing network support for enterprise data centers; utilizing switches, routers, firewalls, load balancing, and LAN technologies.
