Purpose:
Conservation Corps New Mexico (CCNM), a program of Conservation Legacy, provides individuals with internships service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants serve with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits to provide institutional capacity, develop community relationships, and support ecosystem health. In partnership with the Cibola National Forest, CCNM will host a Trails Technician Individual Placement.
CCCNM and Cibola National Forest - Sandia Ranger District
are filling an individual placement to assist the District with oversight of various trails projects on the forest including the work of youth corps, volunteer/partner groups, and contractors. Due to the nature of this position, individual placement will regularly interact with the public while performing field duties. Primary objectives for this position are to work with Forest Trails Staff on the implementation of projects in the Zuni Mountains, Lobo Canyon (Mt. Taylor) and a variety of projects on the Sandia Mountain Range. The ideal individual placement will bring basic trail construction skills/knowledge and receive training in trails management, inspections, information collection for condition surveys, construction of water control structures, minor retaining walls, etc. Individual placement must be able to camp overnight and serve on Saturdays on occasions.
The individual placement will have the opportunity to learn a multitude of trail management skills to bolster their resumes. The U.S. Forest Service welcomes successful participants to apply for future trail management positions within the agency.
Description of Duties:
Trail fundamentals and construction
o Understand basic trail building tools, their use, and methodology of applying treatments to the ground:
o Basic Tool Functionality
o PPE Requirements
o Water Control Structures
o Advanced trail structures (retaining walls, bermed turns, etc.)
Trail inspection, surveys, and project preparation
o Understand basic trail project management and adherence to USFS specs
o Perform inspections and surveys (ensure trails are constructed/ repaired to spec, identify concerns, conduct surveys on trail segments)
o Project Site Prep (flag trail alignments, identify hazard and no-go situations)
o Implementation Prep (ensure PPE/gear is collected for interns and potential partners)
o Post work (identify follow up needs)
Partnerships and Volunteerism (Working with agency partners)
o Assist with the coordination of logistics for partners
o Understand and work with various personality types
o Ensure appropriate level of PPE and training is acquired before moving forward
o Speak to site specific trail standards
Conditions:
Exposure from use of hand tools in a field environment (slip/trip/falls, debris from tool strikes, lifting/carrying, front country/backcountry trails exposure, electric/small gas saw use); exposure from working remote locations. (may stay overnight near projects sites or in nearby USFS bunkhouses if available, ability to be self-sufficient)
Qualifications:
United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien.
Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a background check.
Ability to drive and resume level of detail that demonstrates the basic competency to be trained to perform the work.
Valid U.S Driver's License - Drivers must be over 21 or have had a license for at least 3 years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous experience preferred but not expected.
Physical Requirements:
To successfully perform essential functions, the individual is required to sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, etc. May be required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl for significant periods of time and be able to safely lift 25 pounds on a routine basis. He/she must be able to operate office equipment, telephone, and computer and reach with hands and arms.
Ability to hike and navigate in rough terrain.

Safety and Judgment:
Effectively communicate danger to others in the form of either a warning of danger others may be encountering or a notification of personal distress, injury or need for assistance. Must be able to do so at a distance of up to 50 meters and in conditions with limited visibility or loud background noise such as darkness or high winds.
Effectively perceive and understand significant and apparent hazards and follow direction by others so that you will be able to successfully execute techniques to manage hazards. These directions may be given before the hazard is encountered or may need to be given during the exposure to the hazard. Ability to respond appropriately to stress or crises.
Stay alert and focused for several hours at a time while traveling and working in varied weather conditions.
If taking prescription medications, participants must be able to maintain proper dosage by self- medicating without assistance from others.

Additional Position and Community Information
This position is located near the city of Albuquerque with ample access to housing and amenities.
It is recommended that participant have a personal vehicle for time outside of work.
Benefits:
+ Hourly Wage: $22
Full-time seasonal position (32 or more hours per week)
+ Lump sum of 64 hours for paid time off
+ Sick leave accrual of 1 hour for every 21 hours worked
