This position is located at the SC Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) - Office of Mental Health (OMH), Public Safety Division, 7901 Farrow Road, Columbia SC 29203.
Responsibilities for the Investigations Lieutenant:

  • Investigate reported misconduct, policy violations, and inappropriate behavior in compliance with laws and organizational policies.
  • Interview employees, witnesses, and others to gather facts and evidence for investigations.
  • Collect and verify information, statements, and documentation to establish case facts.
  • Maintain confidential records and organize case files for all investigations.
  • Prepare detailed investigative reports with findings and recommendations.
  • Conduct both formal and informal inquiry meetings to gather additional information and resolve cases.
  • Consult with leadership to settle complaints and handle Ombudsman responsibilities.
  • Manage recruitment activities and build relationships with community organizations and schools.
  • Perform thorough pre-employment background investigations, including reference and credential verification.
  • Prepare accurate correspondence and make objective decisions based on findings from investigations and background checks.
  • A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
  • A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
  • Class One Certification by the Law Enforcement Training Council in accordance with Section 23-23-40 of the Code of Laws of South Carolina 1976.
Additional Requirements
  • Must pass pre-employment drug test, a psychological assessment, background screening and a physical to meet employment requirements.
  • Must meet the 20/20 vision standards or no more than 20/100 corrected to 20/20. Candidates must also be capable of distinguishing, without corrections three colors: green, yellow and red.
  • At least six (6) years relevant experience
  • Desires experience in conducting investigations/employment backgrounds verifications, with strong emphasis and attention to details
  • Excellent judgement and ability to be non-bias in the decision-making process
  • Bilingual abilities in English and Spanish (or another language) are a plus
Some out of state travel and occasional overnight travel may be necessary. Must be able to lift 50 or more pounds.
Post Hire, employee must:
  • Have considerable knowledge of State Laws, rules, and regulations of the South Carolina Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (BHDD) pertaining to employment, ombudsmen and IA guidelines.
