Invasive Plant Surveyor The 30 Mile River Watershed Association (30 Mile) is seeking applicants to join our Invasive Plant Survey team for the 2023 summer season. Staff will conduct lake surveys by kayak for invasive aquatic plants, focusing on the harmful invasive variable leaf watermilfoil in Androscoggin Lake in Wayne. The goals of the program are to eradicate the invasive milfoil from Androscoggin Lake and to detect early any infestations on other lakes. Responsibilities:
  • Survey by kayak the lakes and ponds in the 30 Mile River Watershed for invasive aquatic plants, with a primary focus on Androscoggin Lake in Wayne.
  • Assist SCUBA divers in removing invasive milfoil by providing surface support.
  • Collect and report data on invasive aquatic plants.
  • Educate lakefront property owners and users.
  • Follow safety protocols.
Qualifications:
  • Passion for learning about aquatic ecosystems, aquatic plant identification and protecting lake health.
  • Interest in botany, biology, environmental science, ecology or related field. Prior relevant undergraduate coursework is preferred.
  • Plant identification skills or an interest and ability to learn quickly.
  • Comfort working on the water, spending 4-5 hours per day in a kayak.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Responsibility, maturity and strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with the general public.

The position runs for approximately 12 weeks, late May to mid-August, at an estimated 24 hours/week. Pay starts at $15.50/hr. This position may be combined with the Youth Conservation Corps or Courtesy Boat Inspector positions. Must have transportation and valid driver\xe2\x80\x99s license.
