*This internship will not exceed 400 hours.*

Primary Purpose

Gain real-world experience in a Parks and Recreation Department through assisting in the organization, development, and implementation of citywide Special Events, Community Programs, and Summer Adventure Camps. Contributes to the overall success of the Republic Parks & Recreation Department through collaboration, planning, and innovative thinking to achieve division and departmental goals.

Supervision

Under the direct supervision of the Special Events Administrator and Recreation Coordinator (Programming) and general supervision of the Recreation Superintendent (Operations, Programming, & Events).

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the organization, development, and implementation of citywide Special Event and Community Program offerings.
  • Assists in the overseeing of staff and camp attendees during Summer Adventure Camp.
  • Assists with creation of marketing materials including flyers, posters, and social media graphics.
  • Independently prepares and administers necessary correspondence related but not limited to upcoming Special Events, Community Programs, and Summer Adventure Camps.
  • Develops, oversees, and implements crafts, activities, field trips, etc. for Summer Adventure Camps.
  • Assists in overseeing the implementation of Toddler Park Playdates.
  • Performs special assignments as requested including preparing post event/program reports or assisting with special projects.
  • Deals effectively and courteously with fellow employees and the public.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Important Duties * Attends departmental meetings for professional development purposes.
  • Performs continual research of other Parks and Recreation agencies and trade publications to keep abreast of current trends.
  • Maintains appropriate supplies for assigned area.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly work area.
Minimum Qualifications

Education & Experience

Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Students majoring in Recreation Management, Recreation and Leisure Studies, Recreation, Sport and Park Administration, Entertainment Management, or related area preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must be a self-starter who possesses initiative and urgency in their work. Must be able to effectively communicate through written and verbal skills; Must have good time management skills; Must have good cognitive and analytical skills; Must be able to handle stressful situations; Must be able to quickly assess or judge situations; Must be able to make decisions under pressure in areas of responsibility.

Special Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri State Driver\'s License.
  • Must have current CPR/First Aid Certification through the American Red Cross or become certified upon employment.
Miscellaneous Requirements
  • Will be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Subject to emergency call-in.
  • Must be a dependable person due to the small size of the work force.
  • May be subject to random substance abuse testing.
Supplemental Information

Physical Demands

Performs bending, squatting, crawling, twisting, kneeling, and reaching to ground level and overhead; Must be able to reach, grip and hold; Must be able to walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; Must be able to push, pull, lift, and carry 60 pounds.

Work Environment

Both indoor and outdoor working environments with exposure to dust and pollen, toxic fumes, chemicals or smoke, contagious diseases, electrical and mechanical hazards associated with equipment, extreme noise; Subject to variety of extreme weather condition; Susceptible to safety hazards associated with working in and around high traffic volume; Works in confined places and awkward positions.
