Job Description

Under the direction of the Communications Director, the Outreach Supervisor leads a team of communicators working to protect the planet by raising awareness about plastic and climate pollution. The incumbent manages CalRecycle's outreach strategy through overseeing websites, social media, public education campaigns, creative content, and language access services.




The role shapes how Californians learn about waste reduction, recycling, and circular systems for materials. It turns complex policy into clear, engaging content and makes sure all communities have access to vital environmental information. This position leads major projects, manages public inquiries, and sets the tone for statewide messaging. It's a high-impact role for someone who wants to make a real difference in California's move to a waste-free future.




Bilingual English/Spanish speaking individuals preferred, but not required.



This position may be eligible for hybrid telework under Government Code 14200 for eligible applicants residing in California, subject to the candidate meeting telework eligibility criteria set forth in the CalEPA telework policy and/or future program need. Employees not residing in California are not eligible for telework. Regardless of telework eligibility, all employees may be required to report to the position's designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense.

Beginning July 1, 2026, it is anticipated the position will be office-centered and employees will be expected to report to the office at least four days per week.

Working Conditions


The incumbent works on the 22nd floor of a high-rise office building in downtown Sacramento. The office is located in an enclosed, non-windowed cubicle in a smoke-free environment. The work schedule is Monday through Friday. Travel may be required locally and within the state.

Experience managing innovative teams with proven ability to lead, coach, and oversee a multidisciplinary communications team through project management and cross-department coordination. Submitted work samples and resume demonstrate ability to develop and manage content across websites, social media, and digital platforms with a focus on targeting audiences and turning complex information into compelling, plain language, and visually engaging messages. Experience managing public inquiry systems, including phone and email responses, by overseeing customer service staff and maintaining communications infrastructure to ensure accurate, timely, and respectful engagement with the public. Demonstrated understanding of laws and best practices for inclusive communication with diverse and limited-English-proficient communities.
