Public Works currently has a vacancy for the position of Illustrator and Art Designer (5320) within our Communications and Public Affairs Division.

Communications and Public Affairs
The communications and public affairs team keeps the public and our staff informed of the department\xe2\x80\x99s services, projects and programs through print and broadcast media, social media, podcasts, videos, websites, community meetings and other platforms. The team oversees press relations; manages internal communications, external communications, and government relations; produces award-winning digital journals, videos and podcasts; briefs elected officials; provides construction outreach services; and troubleshoots constituent concerns. The team also organizes special events to celebrate project milestones and staff achievements.

Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt (PEX), Category 17. This position is limited to no more than two (2) years in duration. Category 17 employees are used to backfill a Permanent Civil Service (PCS) employee on a leave of absence. This position is exempt from Civil Service and shall serve at the discretion of the Department Head.



Under the direction of the Director of Policy and Communications, as an Illustrator and Art Designer, you will create visual content for a variety of communications platforms, including, but not limited to websites, brochures, signage, newsletters, reports, digital displays, videos, infographics, photographs, annual reports, and PowerPoint presentations..

Important and Essential Duties:
As an Illustrator and Art Designer, your duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Utilizing various manual and digital tools to create compelling, accessible and culturally diverse visual content, such as graphics, diagrams, illustrations, videos, motion graphics, photographs, and iconography.
  • Consulting with the department\'s creative team members and project leads, developing design concepts, creating mockups, revising concepts upon request, finalizing concepts and working with the City\xe2\x80\x99s Repro Services division and outside vendors to print the creative materials.
  • Collaborating with the department\'s creative team and outside vendors to ensure the collateral is produced as envisioned and on brand, considering such factors as color, size, font, paper quality and cross-platform compatibility.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Possession of a bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Design, Commercial Art, Illustration or related field;

AND

Experience:
Four (4) years of professional, journey-level experience in graphic design or commercial art. This experience must include journey-level experience using computer-based desktop publishing (DTP) platform (Mac or PC) with associated scanners, printers, and software.

Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.

Desirable Qualifications: The stated desirable qualifications may be used to identify job finalists at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring.
  • Experience in website design, mobile design, wireframes, infographics, and social media graphics.
  • Demonstrated experience in project delivery.
  • Exceptionally organized and pays attention to detail.
  • Competency in Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office and familiarity with other graphic design and video editing software.
  • Strong storytelling skills through technical and creative illustration and graphic design.
  • Possess an acute understanding of color theory, typography, and composition.
  • Ability to deliver in a fast-paced, high-demand work environment, often under tight deadlines.
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment.
