Job Overview:
The ICU RVT/Veterinary Technician or Experienced Veterinary Assistant position at MASH (Metropolitan Animal Specialty Hospital) is an opportunity to join an established, expanding group and provide excellent emergency and specialty medical care to veterinary patients in Los Angeles. MASH is a busy emergency and specialty practice located in Hollywood. The ICU (intensive care unit) at MASH is where the most critical patients are hospitalized to provide constant monitoring and attentive care. Those filling this position will care for patients with a variety of illnesses and injuries, collaborating directly with board-certified criticalists and excellent emergency doctors, as well as a wide range of specialists.
Key Duties and Responsibilities

Care for hospitalized patients in a busy ER/specialty hospital setting
Provide intensive care for unstable and critical patients
Collaborate with fellow staff and doctors to provide excellent, gold-standard care to patients
Communicate interdepartmentally to coordinate care for patients
Prioritize tasks and treatments based on urgency and patient acuity
Evaluate patients continually throughout the shift
Maintain safe, sanitary environments for patients
Track trends with patient condition and recognize patient decline
Utilize advanced technical skills proficiently to place:
IV catheters
Sampling lines
Central lines
Arterial lines
Urinary catheters
Nasogastric tubes
Care for patients with various implements such as esophagostomy tubes, tracheostomy tubes, etc.
Care for oxygen-dependent patients, including those on high-flow oxygen
Care for and monitor patients on a mechanical ventilator
Administer blood products
Assist the emergency room with incoming emergencies
Monitor anesthesia for patients in an emergency setting
Perform medical math with full competence, including CRIs, dilutions, and fluid additives
Maintain an open style of communication with staff and doctors, with a willingness to learn
Participate in patient rounds at the beginning and end of shift
Skills and Competencies
Strong ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, critical care setting
Familiarity with general cleaning and sanitation practices, including isolation protocols for contagious diseases
Reliable, energetic, and able to balance several tasks at once while remaining calm and positive
Excellent communication and customer service skills
Familiarity with Fear Free animal handling and restraint techniques
Familiarity with RECOVER CPR guidelines
Ability to examine patients and recognize abnormalities
Strong knowledge of various medical conditions such as diabetes, chronic kidney disease, ITP, IMHA, etc.
Strong knowledge of commonly seen conditions in the ICU, such as sepsis, polytrauma, snake envenomations, coagulopathies, acute kidney injuries, pancreatitis, anemia, etc.
Experience with various in-house lab procedures such as CBC and chemistry machines, manual platelet counts, WBC differentials, etc.
Experience using a mechanical ventilator and high-flow oxygen is a plus
Demonstrate an interest in seeking continued education
Qualifications:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in the veterinary field, 2-3 years in ER/ICU preferred
RVT license preferred
Must have strong listening, communication, and problem-solving abilities
Must have a collaborative approach to patient care
Previous experience in specialty or emergency veterinary medicine
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to:
Stand for up to 80% of a 12-hour shift
Walk up to 50% of a 12-hour shift
Sit for approximately 20% of a 12-hour shift
Lift up to 50 pounds
Frequently bend, squat, kneel, and reach above shoulder height
Occasionally climb and twist
Perform repetitive hand movements for tasks such as grasping and fine manipulation
Utilize all sensory skills (speech, vision, smell, touch, hearing), corrected to near-normal levels
Work Environment:
Over 90% of time is spent indoors
Exposure to temperature and humidity changes indoors
Frequent exposure to cleaning chemicals
The pay for this position is determined by level of experience, licensure, credentials and education
