USA, United States

Job Description

Description :
The HPC Scientific System Architect will be responsible for designing, optimizing, and maintaining high-performance computing (HPC) infrastructure tailored to genomic and scientific workflows. This senior-level role requires deep expertise in HPC architecture, bioinformatics workflows, and system performance tuning. The architect will collaborate with cross-functional teams--including scientists, software engineers, and bioinformaticians--to ensure the infrastructure meets the demanding computational needs of genomic analysis and clinical applications.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
HPC Architecture and System Design:

  • Design scalable HPC systems and environments tailored to Baylor Genetics' scientific computing requirements.
  • Advise on and assist in selecting appropriate hardware based on the performance needs of genomic tools and workflows.
  • Architect hybrid and cloud-based HPC solutions aligned with scientific and operational goals.
Workflow Optimization and Performance Tuning:
  • Collaborate with bioinformatics teams to optimize workflows using job schedulers (e.g., Slurm) and workflow managers (e.g., Nextflow).
  • Tune software and system parameters to enhance performance of bioinformatics and other scientific workloads.
  • Analyze genomics workflows to identify bottlenecks and recommend architectural or software improvements for optimization on the HPC system.
System Administration and Configuration Management:
  • Architect solutions for configuration management and deployment of bioinformatics software.
  • Advise on HPC administration, including storage systems, data management strategies, and monitoring tools.
  • Provide guidance on security and compliance practices for handling sensitive genomic data.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
  • Work closely with scientists, software engineers, and bioinformaticians to align infrastructure with analysis and clinical needs.
  • Support DevOps and IT teams in deploying and maintaining HPC systems and services.
Regulatory and Compliance Support:
  • Ensure HPC systems and workflows comply with regulatory standards such as CLIA, CAP, HIPAA, and FDA.
  • Assist in documenting HPC-related processes and support audits as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Skills:
  • Deep knowledge of HPC architecture and design, especially in genomics and bioinformatics contexts.
  • Advanced proficiency with Slurm, Bright Cluster Manager, and workflow engines such as Nextflow.
  • Hands-on experience of Linux/Unix systems, parallel file systems, and containerization (e.g., Docker, Singularity).
  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead technical initiatives in a fast-paced environment.
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, Bioinformatics, or a related field.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in HPC system architecture or administration.
