Education - High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
Experience - Phlebotomy classes and 1 year of experience OR 18 months of experience as a phlebotomist are preferred but not required
Licenses & Certification - Eligible for certification in phlebotomy preferred but not required.

JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of the position is to perform phlebotomist duties collecting and transporting specimens for testing and analysis, processing specimens, packing specimens for transportation, specimen tracking, and all related clerical functions and general clean-up tasks. Technical support and guidance provided under the supervision of the laboratory manager.
Hospital Phlebotomists must be competent in all tasks related to phlebotomy, processing, send-outs, ordering, and competent to perform all waived testing at their primary site and able to assist as needed at other MCNDOH laboratories. A Hospital Phlebotomist may be trained to place specimens on automated analyzers (pre-analytic functions).
A competent Hospital Phlebotomist must be able to train less experienced coworkers and provide assistance with problem resolution including recollection of lab specimens, reports to providers, specimen requirements for esoteric testing, and providing information related to specimen collection to other healthcare workers, patients, and family members.
Because MCNDOH hospital laboratories must be staffed 24/7, the Hospital Phlebotomist working in a hospital will rotate holidays and may be required to rotate to other days and hours as needed for patient care.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed in a laboratory environment. There is common exposure to infectious communicable disease, potentially hazardous chemicals, and biohazardous materials. Incumbent must be aware of all risks involved and be willing to take precautions as required and requested. Special attire may be required as protection against infection and radiation.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work requires long periods of standing and walking in a laboratory and other areas of the facility. Working with patients requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching and positioning patients. Ability to lift in excess of 50 pounds is needed. Incumbent will also have to cope with constant changes in a stress-laden environment. Must be able to differentiate color and pass a color blindness test.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Satisfactory job performance will be determined by successful execution of the following:
Performs phlebotomist duties obtaining specimens for laboratory analysis and testing, successfully performs arterial blood collections in hospital setting and is proficient in performing blood collections from infants, children and elderly patients.
Performs clerical duties associated with all laboratory reporting including faxing of results, delivering results to the ordering providers, providing daily logs for billing/coding, maintaining logs for all reference testing, and other clerical duties assigned by the laboratory manager.
Delivers specimens to other laboratories as a back-up plan in case of equipment failure in order to continue to provide lab results to patients in an efficient manner.
Regular attendance is required.
Provides administrative support to the laboratory manager.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Maintains continuing education as required.
Verifies lab reports are received and completed in a laboratory information system and electronic health record.
Assists the laboratory assistants, technicians, or technologists in performing various chemical, serological, immunological and bacteriological testing and other tests as directed.
Trains less experienced staff.
Verifies waived testing results with little supervision.
Assists with daily, weekly, and monthly reports as assigned
Recognizes appropriate specimens and rejects unacceptable specimens prior to testing.
Actively searches for additional duties and identifies performance improvement opportunities.
LIMITATIONS
A Hospital Phlebotomist cannot perform any high complexity testing.
