Position Summary

The Home Repair Assistant supports the delivery of essential home modification and repair services for older adults and individuals with disabilities across Kalamazoo County. This role is hands-on, helping ensure that homes are safe, accessible, and maintained to improve quality of life for vulnerable community members. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and enjoys working with their hands in a mission-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Assists skilled technicians in the completion of minor home repairs, safety modifications, and accessibility improvements (e.g., grab bars, ramps, handrails, minor plumbing or carpentry). Load and transport tools, materials, and equipment to and from work sites. Maintain a clean and organized work environment, ensuring proper use and care of tools and vehicles. Work respectfully in clients' homes, ensuring professionalism and confidentiality at all times. Support volunteer groups on-site. Communicate effectively with team members regarding project progress, challenges, or supply needs. Follow all safety protocols and support compliance with agency, funder, and local regulations. Document work completed and hours worked per project using program-specific tracking forms or mobile tools

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. At least 1 year of experience in home repair, construction, facilities, or related field preferred (volunteer or paid). Basic knowledge of hand tools, power tools, and safe practices. Strong communication skills and ability to work with diverse populations. Valid driver's license and clean driving record required. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, stand for extended periods, and work indoors and outdoors in varying conditions. Commitment to the mission of improving housing and accessibility for under-served populations.

Preferred Attributes

Experience working in a nonprofit or community services setting. Experience working with older adults or individuals with disabilities.

Compensation & Benefits

Non - Exempt position with starting hourly pay range $14.02 - $18.23, based on experience level Benefits packages include: 403b retirement plan with matching with requirements met. Employee assistance programs (EAP)
