Job Description

This position will serve as the Histology Supervisor, reporting into the Lab Manager. This is a working position and the candidate is responsible for processing surgical specimens by performing various Histology procedures, including macroscopic examination, processing (chemical fixation), embedding, microtomy, and staining of tissues and fluids. The individual will be responsible for supervising and managing the other members of the department, coordinating schedules, assisting with validations, assisting with future hires, and other tasks as delegated by the lab manager and medical director. Assess quality and appropriateness of specimens received and takes appropriate action. Performs macroscopic examination (grossing), processing, embedding, microtomy and routine staining of Histology and Cytology specimens to meet established productivity and quality standards. Performs special stains and immunohistochemical stains and maintains quality controls as needed. Maintains neat, organized and legible written records Maintains a clean organized work area Maintains appropriate supply inventory at assigned area. Performs supply inventory. Performs routine staining procedures accurately and troubleshoots potential problems. Files a variety of Histology materials, including but not limited to slides and blocks. Retains a variety of materials including slides, blocks, specimens, requisitions and reports for the appropriate amount of time to comply with inspecting agencies. Follows specialized staining procedures. Participates in in-service training as required. Participates in continuing education as required. Prioritizes and reorganizes workload in response to emergency procedures. Adheres to departmental policies and procedures. Demonstrates flexibility in work schedule to include weekends and holidays. Performs required maintenance on all Histology equipment including but not limited to processor, embedding center, microtome and stainer. Ability to trouble shoot as needed histology equipment and follow up with appropriate vendors Demonstrate professionalism as evidenced by the cooperative attitude of peers and associated staff. Performs Histology procedures in conjunction with other Histology personnel such specimen disposal, filing slides, preparation of distribution slides and completing appropriate paperwork for consults and sendout tests. Handle biohazard wastes according to the SOPs Demonstrates commitment to our mission and Customer Service by adhering to all facets of the Laboratory policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and certificate/license:



Bachelor or equivalent

HT(ASCP) preferred

Experience:



Must have at least three years

of bench Histology experience. Previous supervisory experience is a plus but not mandatory.

Proficiency in cutting general surgical, Gastrointestinal, Genitourinary, Dermatology, and Bone Marrow morphology specimen types.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:



1. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with physicians and other clinical personnel when gathering and exchanging specimen related information.

2. Analytical skills necessary to ascertain physician needs.

3. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when mixing solutions and reagents, embedding and cutting tissues.

4. Effective communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact professionally and courteously with management and other personnel. Must be able to communicate effectively by telephone, e-mail and in person with customers, co-workers and supervisors.

5. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

6. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected. Requires ability to handle irate customers, good judgment on tough decisions, and ability to resolve complex situations

7. Occasional walking, standing, bending and reaching when filing, photocopying, etc.

8. Light lifting of under 50 pounds on an infrequent basis.

9. Repetitive wrist motion when performing microtomy procedures.

10. Moderate risk for exposure.

11. There is a moderate potential for skin, eye, mucous membrane, non-intact skin or parenteral contact with chemicals may result from the performance of an employee's regular duties.

Pay: $38.00 - $45.00 per hour
