Salary: $5,687.07 per month

Duties:

The Wyoming Highway Patrol (WHP) is seeking motivated applicants for the position of Trooper I to fill vacancies across Wyoming. The Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper I enforces the laws of the State of Wyoming through primary contact with the public and has statewide jurisdiction.

WHP candidates must be able to complete the Wyoming Highway Patrol training academy and field training program. The length of these programs varies based on previous experience and/or certifications. Successful Trooper I candidates must be willing to live and work anywhere in Wyoming; assignments are based on the balance of the desire of the applicant and the needs of the Department with your duty station assignment provided to you at your time of hire.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.
  • Assist with traffic law enforcement, crash investigations, citizen assistance, executive or dignitary protection, safety awareness activities/promotion, and public speaking
  • Ensure excellent communication skills with the public, peers, chain of command, and internal and external stakeholders in all situations
  • Anticipate and adapt to changing situations and maintain self-control under stressful situations continuously. This includes working alone while making sound decisions at a moments notice.
  • Administer first/medical aid
  • Other duties include court appearances, criminal interdiction, commercial vehicle enforcement, education, and other tasks as assigned.

  • Basic research and understanding of the job duties of a Wyoming State Trooper.
  • Understand the challenges of Wyoming weather.
  • Healthy physical fitness and nutrition habits.
  • Comprehension of Wyoming Highway Patrol testing process.
Qualifications

PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:

**Applicants with a current P.O.S.T Certification or equivalent from other states
are encouraged to apply as your prior training and certifications will meet the
minimum qualifications for a Trooper II position. You will attend a Mini
Training Academy with proof of prior training and P.O.S.T certifications.

OR

**Applicants must possess the Basic Certification through Wyoming
Peace Officers Standards & Training Commission and possess an
Advanced Peace Officer Certification or equivalent from another state as recognized by Wyoming P.O.S.T. that is based on years of service and training hours. Wyoming P.O.S.T. will determine this (See NOTES for more information on P.O.S.T. certification.)

The above requirements are for Trooper II positions only. P.O.S.T. certification is not a requirement for a Trooper I position. If you do not meet the above
requirements, please apply for a Trooper I position.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of State Statutes, Commercial Vehicle Rules, and Regulations (state and federal)
  • Knowledge of WHP Operational Policies and Memoranda, Rules of Criminal Procedure, and SEMM policy
  • Knowledge of Wyoming Highway System, Local, State, and Supreme Court Decisions, ICS Structure and Protocol
  • Knowledge of WYDOT Basic Operating Policy, Snow Plans, Construction Traffic Control Techniques, and WYDOT Organizational Structure.
  • Basic research and understanding of the job duties of a Wyoming State
  • Trooper.
  • Understand the challenges of Wyoming weather.
  • Healthy physical fitness and nutrition habits.
  • Comprehension of Wyoming Highway Patrol testing process.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:High School Diploma /GED/ or equivalent Experience:3-5 years of work experience working with the public which includes 1-2 years as a certified law enforcement officer in Wyoming or equivalent in another state or as a Trooper with Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Applicant must possess the Advanced Peace Officer POST certification through the Wyoming Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission or equivalent certification through another state.

  • The WHP is a partner with the United States Veterans Administration On-The-Job Training Program. Eligible Veterans can receive additional compensation through this program while training with the Patrol. (This is an additional income up to your first 2 years).
